Youth education in Nigeria is in crisis. Of every 5 impoverished children in the world, 1 comes from Nigeria. 30% of them are illiterate. 80% of them never reach their academic potential. The majority of these children will never obtain good paying jobs, and the cycle of poverty will repeat itself. Finding a way to empower children to reach their potential is the only way to break this cycle. Chess in Slums uses the game of chess as a framework to teach academic skills, critical thinking and a lifelong appreciation for learning to these children. We use a 3-fold strategy to help kids stay in school and reach their potential:
Mentorship
We use chess as a life framework to teach relevant life skills: developing strategy and making good decisions. This helps build their academic foundation and confidence.
Love
Youth education in Nigeria is in crisis. But using chess, we help children develop their love for learning. Each of our mentors shares one thing in common: our deep love for children and our desire to help improve their lives. It is the love of our mentors that helps children to develop their love of learning.
Structure
Our learning center provides a safe, stable place to learn and grow. By doing this, we give them structured time. Each hour a child spends developing their minds productively is an hour that they are off the dangerous streets of Nigeria.
Our Request:
Chess in Slums is completely run by volunteers. We are asking for your generous donations to help keep our mission going. We host over 200 kids at our current training center. To make it completely operational and fulfill our goal of producing 10 outstanding scholars annually, we need more funding for scholarships, resources, and food. Our dream is to one day have training centers all across Africa. With very limited resources, we have been able to train more than 200 children and enroll 15 children from our academy on full-ride educational scholarship support. With your support, there’s no limit to how much more we can achieve and help change a lot of lives. It is our collective responsibility to make sure every child is given equal opportunity to excel and build the future they want for themselves regardless of their background. We must make sure their future isn’t one without imagination.
