Chelsea to Childrens Harbor 100 Mile Run for SAM

Tax deductible
WILL YOU JOIN ME AND HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A CHILD'S LIFE?
Every year, Smile-A-Mile provides programs and camps for hundreds of Kids and Teens with cancer and their families right here in Alabama.  All Smile-A-Mile programs and camps are totally free. The Children's Harbor facility on Lake Martin is provided to SAM at no charge. The cost to host the "On Therapy" and "Off Therapy" Family Camps at Children's Harbor is about $500 per camper. That is where the Chelsea to Children's Harbor 100 comes in. We hope to raise $5,000 for SAM. That will pay for 10 kids and their family, to attend one of these weekend family camps. Please make a donation to Smile-A-Mile.

I am running 100 miles from my house in Chelsea, Alabama to Children's Harbor on the shores of Lake Martin, the location of seven Smile-A-Mile Camps. 100% of your donation goes directly to Smile-A-Mile, and any donation will have an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me. We hope to raise $5,000. This will pay for 10 campers and their families at one of the SAM family camps.

Our run is coordinated with Smile-A-Mile. When you make a donation, the money goes directly into Smile-A-Mile's account. You will receive a thank you email from SAM for your donation and, of course, your donation is tax deductible. You are welcome to go directly to the Smile-A-Mile website  and make the donation. If you do this, please specify you are donating to support Chelsea to Children's Harbor - Run for SAM .

EXACTLY WHAT IS SMILE-A-MILE?
Smile-A-Mile started more than 30 years ago with just a single summer camp session for children in Alabama with cancer.  Over the years, Smile-A-Mile has grown to be a year-round program that serves children and their families from diagnosis and through the years beyond treatment.  SAM's purpose is to provide hope for these families through their cancer journey.

Smile-A-Mile's mission is to provide hope, healing of the spirit and love for the whole family during the childhood cancer journey. Through year-round meaningful and educational programming, Smile-A-Mile helps those in Alabama who are affected by childhood cancer thrive during treatment and the years beyond.

WHY AM I DOING THIS?

Nine years ago my wife, Marye Jo and I created our first trail race, the Run for Kids Challenge. The Run for Kids (RFK) race had, and still has, one purpose. Raise money for Smile-A-Mile. (SAM) We have never accepted a director's fee for the RFK and never will. All proceeds from registration go to SAM after minimal expenses. Over the last 9 years since the first Run for Kids we have met many parents that have spent time with their child at Camp Smile-A-Mile, as it was called in 2011. Several have spent many weekends at SAM Family Camps. They all agree, Camp SAM made a huge difference in their lives and the lives of the child with cancer. SAM MAKES A DIFFERENCE! HELP US MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR SAM.

This year, thanks to the COVID-19 virus, we will likely have to cancel the race. Through this run on May 30th and 31st we call "Chelsea to Children's Harbor 100 Run for SAM," I hope to raise $5,000 to help offset the loss from not having the Run for Kids in 2020. $10,000 in donations would be even better! Please help.

My run was inspired by James Allen Hornady's solo run for Opelika, AL, 42 miles to Children's Harbor. He is running on May 30th.  Here is in interview with James' TV interview on WLTZ:  Smile A Mile Ultra Marathon

WHO AM I?
My name is David Tosch. In 2013 Marye Jo and I started Southeastern Trail Runs. Our race series now have 10 events each year. All of our races are in the central and north-central Alabama Area. As I stated above, our first race was Run for Kids in 2011. I am a lifelong runner. I am now 70 and still running. And yes, I can run 100 miles. I run at least one 100 mile race every year, sometimes two. Follow our progress on the Southeastern Trail Runs Facebook page. The link is below.

THE RUN:
We will start our run about 5:30 AM Saturday morning, May 30th right in front of our home in Chelsea, Alabama. The route follows mostly county roads winding though the rolling hills and beautiful farmland of central Alabama.  (Here is a link to the course on Google Maps .) We will have a group of 5 to 10 runners and several volunteers driving ahead setting up mobile aid stations about every 10 miles. We hope to arrive at Children's Harbor before noon on Sunday, May 31st. We will be posting updates as we run to the Southeastern Trail Runs Facebook Page  and Birmingham Ultra Trail Society's  Facebook Pages.

Take a look at a short video of the final 12 minutes of the 2019 Run for Kids Challenge 12 Hour Race. The first 11 hours are run on a 6 mile loop. Then we switch to a 1 mile loop. The last 12 minutes are on a 220 Yard loop. It gets exciting.

I made the video below in 2015 to encourage donations to RFK. It is a series of photos from various SAM Camps at Children's Harbor.
Warning, have your Kleenex's close by.
