On September 10th, 2017, Miami was faced with an uncertain future as Hurricane Irma, the biggest storm recorded in story, was to touch ground, possibly destroying the city and quite possibly, the entire state. The massive storm wreaked havoc on the Magic City’s businesses, homes and ecosystem, leaving thousands of Miami residents without power and hundred of thousands of dollars in damages.
Though physically unscathed, Area 31’s own chef couple Daryn Garcia and Jessica Tejada suffered much damage to their home, leaving them and their family without a roof over their heads and thousands of dollars in future repairs.
Chef Daryn and his family had no other option than to weather the storm in his Palmetto Bay childhood home, as evacuation was no option, due to his wife’s 5-month pregnancy and his elderly, disabled mother. Equipped with a broken generator, limited food, water and hurricane essentials, the family of 8 (Daryn’s father and other family members including one infant) stayed in the home, hoping to be spared from the storm’s fury but fearing the worst. Fortunately, the family survived the storm but the house suffered extensive damage. The ravaging winds left the Garcia home with an exposed roof, a broken generator and hundreds of dollars lost in spoiled food. The family is thankful to be safe but is now facing an insurance deductible of $6,000 to begin the repairs to the roof, adding to the financial burden of first-time parenthood and caring for a disabled parent. The family is currently living under partially tarped up roof, which can give way at any moment. We are begging for your helping in raising the $6,000 to help Chef Daryn and his family pay the insurance deductible and start repairs and relieve some of this financial burden from this young, hardworking couple.
