Last night, June 24th, I got that knock on the door that everyone fears they might get. Local police department came to inform my family that my older brother had overdosed on heroin. Collectively our world has crumbled literally in an instant. He was only two years my elder but as we grew I believed with my whole heart that he was invincible! My superhero, but superheroes don't die right?
We never went without the essentials as kids, but we struggled badly financially. As we try to wrap our minds around the loss of this larger than life man with a personality that left a lifelong impact on anyone who knew him, the price of a cremation scares us. Charles was the most loyal son, brother, uncle, or friend anyone could ever hope for. Anytime someone asked him for help, he was there. No questions asked-no hesitation. So we feel it's only right to do whatever we can to respect his final wishes and celebrate his life not his unfortunate death.
Anyone who has personally struggled with the disease of addiction or even had a loved one who struggled, knows that violent and earth shattering ending can come with one momentary lack of strength. A single decision that was undeniably selfish, and very much out of character for my brother, and now my mother has to bury her first born son. Charles had worked so hard in the last two years to climb from the depths of this disease and we watched proudly as he seemingly conquered the monster and even stared down the demons of his mental health.
Our family is one who has always fought hard and pridefully handled things without asking for help. But the loss of such an amazing man will humble even the proudest of people. To know him was to love him and our love for him will never fade. Please help us return the respect and kindness in the last chapter of my superhero's legacy!
