Charlie's IVDD Surgery

For those of you who've met Charlie, you know how loving he truly is. Ever since I rescued him when I was in college, he's changed my life forever. From the very beginning I knew he was going to be something so special and he's the most loyal animal I could have ever been blessed with. He's traveled all over with me across the country and every where in between. When you’re in his presence, you can't be upset, he doesn't allow it! He's been there for the biggest milestones in my life and I can't imagine being without him. I came home from work Friday night and usually he's wagging his tail at the door waiting for me to come in so he can jump all over me and lick my face, but he didn't this time. He was laying on the couch shaking, wagging his tail as if he realllyyyyyyy wanted to come see me, but couldn't. I picked him up and brought him outside where he was showing me he was able to walk at this point. We went to bed and he was definitely trying to tell me something because he wasn't coming to snuggle right up against me like he normally does. The next day, I took him to the vet with me (where I currently work) and had the Dr. examine him to find that he passed both his neuro and orthopedic exams. He continued to follow me around all day like he normally does on days he comes to work with him momma, until suddenly he couldn't use his back feet well. I immediately got the Dr. and we took hip and knee radiographs to rule out any dislocations as well as possible fractures or breaks etc. Everything was normal. I'm very educated on Dachshunds and that they are prone to back problems due to their structure, it always is in the back of my mind when he's not feeling well. I knew as soon as the radiographs came back unremarkable, something was wrong. The Dr. then did another neuro and orthopedic exam where he then failed both. Couldn't walk, was dragging his feet, and was not in control of his backend any longer. I immediately rushed him to the Referral and Emergency hospital where they determined he needed an MRI to confirm but it is most likely Intervertebral Disc Disease. They admitted Charlie to start him on a pain regimen and cage confinement until the Neuro Specialist can fully assess. Overnight he got progressively worse to the point where he can no longer go to the bathroom on his own or have any mobility in his back legs at all. As I’m typing this they are preparing him for Anesthesia for the MRI to identify the spot(s) his disc(s) have herniated into his spinal canal pushing on the spinal cord nerves, then will head straight into surgery. Charlie deserves the WORLD after what he's done bringing love and happiness to me and everyone he comes in contact with. From his bowties, which he LOVES to wear, to the look he gives you when you pet his belly, he's an incredible dog and more than just an animal. He's my family and as most call it "fur baby" and I will do anything to give him the best care he needs for recovery and for the rest of his life to make sure he does not have to endure this pain and suffering ever again. This surgery and his hospitalization are costing around $9,000 in total. I'm covering as much as I can, but can use ANY help in making sure he gets exactly what he needs to fully recover and gain his mobility back.
