Charlie-Thomas Murphy is only 3 and was was born a T.O.F Baby (trachea oesophagus fistulas) which means he has never eaten in the way we take for granted. He was born with a long gap in his oesophagus. He's had many operations to help him with this condition, One of them being a Gastric Transposition which stretches his stomach to the top of his oesophagus.
Unfortunately during this procedure some nerve damaged occurred which means when Charlie does try to eat he aspirates fluid and foods straight onto his lungs making him very ill, choke and fight for his breath sometimes leading to another visit to Leeds Children's Hospital were all his specialists are, And because of this he is still fed through a tube into the top of his bowel.
Eventually in years to come this will heal, we pray and hope, and then we'll be able to slowly wean him off his pump which is feeding him and begin to feed him orally.
This is where we need help from all our family, friends and colleges who have a couple of bob to spare.
Because Charlie has never eaten in a way we take for granted we will need expert help..... There is a specialised feeding clinic one in Switzerland and two in Austria with a magnificent track record in helping children like Charlie, It was recently featured on the TV in a programme that showed them treating and eventually helping a little girl with the same problems to eat again. Ideally we would love it if he could be treated in this country but.............
We've started to raise funds towards helping Charlie take his first steps into leading a normal healthy life.
