WHAT HAPPENED: While on the water, after years of exceptional service our starboard engine unexpectedly had a major failure and needs to be replaced quickly. Sea Scout Ship #110 has a long history in Tacoma. Thousands of local youth have been crew members of the Charles N Curtis over the years. We needed your help to get the Curtis back out serving the youth of Tacoma, Pierce County again. Sea Scout Skipper Tom Roger and the Propeller Club of Tacoma are leading this campaign to replace the starboard engine.

STORY: While in up Bellingham the engine failed and all efforts to restart were unsuccessful. A diesel mechanic determined it was an unknown catastrophic failure and only a rebuild or replacement will get the engine operational again. Depending on the extent of the damage the estimated cost for the repair is $15,000 to $20,000. The ship has returned to Tacoma on one engine, it will be looked at by mechanics and shipwrights this week to begin planning the repair or replacement of the starboard engine. We only have a couple remaining weeks before school starts in vigor and for our crews to help out with the project and to keep expenses lower. And in the fall the ship is scheduled to begin winter maritime training, several rank advancement exercises and working the docks at the Husky home games, it's also helping Tacoma Public Schools with their marine science programs. We appreciate the support!
