Charles Dupre Memorial for Almost Home Foundation

My father, Charles Dupre, passed away on Sunday, July 19th at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.  He spent nearly 2 weeks in the hospital and over a week in ICU eventually scumming to Covid-19 after 4 days on a ventilator.  He was 76 years old.

In 2016, Charles' 1st Great-grandson, Jayden Dupre (3 at the time), was brought to the Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge due to a continued decline in his health after being diagnosed with the flu.  Jayden had to be airlifted and transferred to the Children's Hospital in New Orleans where he spent nearly a week in ICU.  It was determined that Jayden has a generic mutation and highly rare autoimmune blood disorder called Atypical Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome (or aHUS for short).  We nearly lost Jayden at a young age.  Today, Jayden must have on-going, bi-monthly infusions of the drug Solaris to manage the risks associated with another outbreak.

aHUS is so uncommon that there are no more than 2 cases currently in Louisiana, fewer than 700 total in the US, and no more than 140,000 worldwide.  This disease typically has close to a 65% mortality rate within the first year of the initial diagnosis.  Most survivors of aHUS have lifelong dialysis treatments due to renal failure and other potential complications with vital organ damage.

When we learned Jayden could be in the hospital for as long as six weeks, a kind gentleman provided his fully furnished vacation home  directly across the street from Children's Hospital as a place to freshen up during the day or as an overnight stay for out of town family members.  I was quite moved by this kindness and desire to help others in a time of need.  This is the basis for seeding the concept of a future foundation to be established that would provide temporary living quarters to families in similar situations.  The Almost Home Foundation will serve those in need of room and board to the family of those with loved ones who have extended hospital stays.

With the unexpected and sudden death of Charles Dupre, in lieu of flowers or other donations, we would like to ask that donations be made to this Go Fund Me page that will serve as a basis for the future establishment of this concept foundation in order to give back to other families in need.

Thank you for your assistance, love, and support!
