Care Packages for the Homeless

Tax deductible
Assalamu’alaykum (Peace be with you)

If you are reading this, you are probably sitting in front of a computer in the comfort of your home, sheltered from the brutal winter weather we’ve been facing in Chicago this year. You probably have access to heating, hot water, food, a bed, and countless other amenities. We thank God for the blessings that He has bestowed upon us, and ask that He continues to shower us with His mercy. However, as we sit comfortably, there are thousands of people throughout the city who are not as fortunate as we are.

The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless estimates that over 130,000 Chicagoans were homeless last year, ranging from children as young as 14 to adults. It is difficult to imagine having to endure the harsh weather, temperatures often falling below 10°F, without even the most basic of necessities. Unfortunately, this is a reality for a growing number of people in Chicago, and throughout the world. As members of society who have been blessed with more than we could ask for, it is our duty to look after the well-being of those in need. Time and time again, God and His Messenger (PBUH) encourage us to spend on the less-fortunate from what we have been given.

In an attempt to do our our part, Young Muslims, along with Sisters Steppin’ Up, and the Youth Council of the Muslim Community Center will be holding a charity drive to  provide the homeless of Chicago with care packages consisting of basic amenities in order to make life a bit easier, God willing.

The care packages will be comprised of versatile backpacks, filled with a number of items, including:

-a compact, insulating sleeping bag
-a rain poncho
-gloves
-socks
-hats
-wet wipes
-hand sanitizer
-a toothbrush
-toothpaste
-a hairbrush
-a reusable water bottle
-toiletries
-a small towel
-a flashlight
-food items (sandwich, breakfast bar ,etc)
-a Qur’an translation

These care packages will be prepared and hand-delivered to homeless Chicagoans by the youth of our Muslim community.

The estimated cost of each care package is roughly $40. Our goal is to collect enough donations to prepare and distribute 50 packages by the end of February, God willing, and to continue collecting enough to distribute them on a regular basis.

We humbly request all of you to give what you can from what you have been given, be it a small amount or a large one, so that those who are less fortunate than us can enjoy some of the basic necessities that we often take for granted. All contributions are greatly appreciated. May you be rewarded abundantly.

Thank You!
