Chantel's Journey to Medical School

Donation protected
Dear  Friends and Family,

As some of you know I am pursuing a career in the medical field and wish to receive my MPH/MD and practice as a family doctor in an underrepresented community. I am currently attending San Francisco State University’s  Pre-Medical Post-baccalaureate program and I am in need of funds to continue  to prepare  for  my admission into medical school in the fall of 2020. In my pursuit to  receive a  dual degree in public health and medicine I have first handedly  seen the uprising of existing health disparities and  injustices,  mental illness, and  drug addictions  that have paralyzed low-income areas due to a lack of resources and education. While moved by this, I became a voice for  my community  to transform it for the better. In the community of Merced, my colleagues and I  were able to persuade the mayor and other city officials to pass a zoning law to decrease tobacco ad exposure to young children to lower corporate and peer pressure of smoking.  I also managed  health campaigns that passed laws to increase educational opportunities for young kids and medical insurance funding in the state of California.  With these experiences I have realized that medical treatment does not begin in the hospital doors, rather it starts in understanding the needs of your community. Today, in low income communities, children at the age of 12 are being diagnosed with prediabetes, severe obesity and hypertension, all commonly found in older adults. As a family practitioner and advocate for public health disparities, these issues will be at the forefront of my pursuit to revise the current lack of inclusion of all communities in the healthcare system. It is for this reason I want to achieve my masters in public  health and be a licensed family practitioner to combine these credentials to provide sustainable health care  for low income families. With your generous investments, I will be able to complete my 2 year post-bac program and attend medical school in the year of 2020.

Since I’ve been at the Pre-med Post-baccalaureate program, I have had access to medical research internships at some of the top medical schools, UCSF, UC Berkeley, and Stanford. Most importantly, this program has provided me with the opportunity to get a head start in my medical school requirements and I currently  have a 3.7 GPA. I am finishing up my first year for which I have received financial aid for, however, the second year is based on self-supported finances and I would appreciate each and every generous donation as  it will be crucial to my success in finishing the program. My second year begins January 22nd, 2018 and your precious donations will kindly be appreciated before then.  Thank you so much for your contribution(anything helps).
