About CEO, Jelissa:
27 yrs old, survivor of homelessness and the foster care system, graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Fashion Business Management.
About Startup:
Chameleon Melanin is a feminine streetwear brand for Black Women. Our goal is to amplify Black Female visibility and femininity. The lack of and poor representation of Black Women in the media has left a damaging effect on Black Women and girls, contributing to issues with mental health. There is an unfortunate history of Black Women being not even second but an afterthought, in health, media, and in everyday life. Through the isolation from beauty and fashion representation and reinforcing the idea that the standard of beauty is not Black. Leaving them to want to be seen. I want to fix that with Chameleon Melanin, creating a safe space of visibility and positive imagery for Black Women and Girls.
Furthermore, the creation of Chameleon Melanin will provide jobs to Black Women- in modeling, operations, and customer service.
Once the line is successful I hope to provide scholarships and grants to Black Women and Young Girls from different walks of life. For every garment you purchase, you’re contributing to Black Women’s empowerment.
