<div>F Stop Studio’s aims to democratize access to silver-based and experimental photography practices by providing a creative laboratory for artists and enthusiasts of photographic media.

<div>If we build it, they will come… to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt9DdaIpJBA" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Botsford Station</a> ! In the last decade, the heritage building at 232 Botsford Street has become “a place for ideas to come to life”. Building owner Dan Gillis has created a “community hub, where individuals who are changemakers in our communities come together to work and cross-pollinate, and connect...”. Botsford Station has been host to several startups and has been interested in having a darkroom within its walls since back in 2011… 15 years - and lots of renovations - later Botsford Station is working with F Stop to make this dream a reality and is (almost) ready to lease a space for F Stop Studio.

<div>F Stop’s operational structure will be based on artist-run, not-for-profit cooperative models. <strong>Once it's up and running, folks will be able to purchase a membership for a defined amount of time or simply sign up for pay-to-play, workshops, classes or camps for people of all ages and abilities. </strong>That’s right: Photo-Camp?! How fun! The studio also intends to work closely with other Atlantic arts and cultural organizations to develop (pun-intended) partnerships and programming. F Stop is looking to foster lasting relationships with the teaching staff and students of nearby universities offering photography courses in their academic programs. Fine Arts grads: you’ll have a safe, proper space to keep honing your skills and making photographic work after your studies!

<div>Thanks to several past donations and acquisitions, the F Stop team already possesses most of the specialized equipment required for darkroom work such as: enlargers, trays and developing tanks… <strong>The goal of this GoFundMe campaign is to help us get money to purchase a few larger pieces essential for the space in order to build this creative laboratory and to start developing our future programming.</strong>

<div><strong>WHO’S BEHIND THIS WONDERFUL IDEA?!</strong>

<div><strong>Co-founders, </strong><a href="https://www.catherinearseneault.com/qui-who" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Catherine Arseneault</strong></a> <strong> and </strong><a href="https://anniefrancenoel.com/bio" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Annie France Noël</strong></a> <strong> are professional lens-based artists and alternative photography nerds. </strong>They have been dreaming of safe, accessible, and functional film photography infrastructure since they left the Fine Arts department at Université de Moncton more than a decade ago.

<div>Their story is not unique: New Brunswick students with studies in Fine Arts set off into the real world seeking to pursue photography of the film kind with nowhere to practice. Although setting up a darkroom is rather simple, specialized lighting, plumbing and ventilation are necessary for a safe working environment. <strong>In the absence of professional public access darkrooms in the region, artists end up: working alone in dubious sometimes dangerous makeshift setups; making the switch to digital processes; or, unfortunately, abandoning their photographic practice altogether.</strong>

<div>Combined, Cat and Annie have more than 20 years of experience in photographic arts and cultural administration. Having worked together on all kinds of DIY creative initiatives back in the day and, more recently, for a registered artist-run centre, they are well-versed in the realities of the contemporary art scene in Moncton, as well as at more regional and national levels. They are passionate about bringing analog photography and all of its artistic possibilities to the cultural ecosystem in which they came of age.

<div>Moreover, they know of the power of community and its importance in sharing knowledge and resources, and fostering sustainable relationships. <strong>Film photography aficionados, lens-based artists of all levels, and curious cats are everywhere… and working alone, in their basements or bathrooms. The desire and need to be part of a photo-centric community to exchange and create alongside others who share love for this timeless practice is real.</strong> F Stop aims to fulfill this need by providing education on and access to the medium and by bringing people together to create community.

<div>In the coming months, F Stop will take further steps to professionalize itself and get grants wherever possible. We aim to closely follow the renovation project, join key cultural organizations, and establish policies and governess structure. We will also hold our inaugural general meeting to onboard new administrators to form the first official iteration of the Board of Directors.

<div>F Stop Studio vise à démocratiser l’accès aux pratiques photographiques argentiques et expérimentales en offrant un laboratoire créatif aux artistes et aux personnes passionnées de la photographie analogique.

<div>Si nous le construisons, ils viendront… à <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt9DdaIpJBA" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Botsford Station</a> ! Au cours de la dernière décennie, l’édifice patrimonial situé au 232, rue Botsford est devenu « un lieu où les idées prennent vie ». Le propriétaire de l'immeuble, Dan Gillis, a créé un « centre communautaire, où les individus qui sont des acteurs du changement dans nos communautés se réunissent pour travailler, se polliniser et se connecter... ». <div>La structure opérationnelle d’F Stop sera basée sur des modèles coopératifs à but non lucratif autogérés par des artistes. <strong>Une fois opérationnel, les gens pourront acheter un abonnement pour une durée définie ou simplement s'inscrire à des ateliers, des cours ou des camps payants pour des personnes de tous âges et de toutes capacités.</strong> Eh, oui : un camp de photographie! Quelle merveille! Le studio a également l'intention de travailler en étroite collaboration avec d'autres organismes artistiques et culturels de l'Atlantique pour développer des partenariats et des programmes, ainsi que de favoriser des relations durables avec le personnel enseignant et les étudiant•es des universités voisines offrant des cours de photographie dans leurs programmes académiques. Bien que le concept d’une chambre noire soit assez simple, un éclairage, une plomberie et une ventilation spécialisée sont nécessaires afin de travailler de façon saine et sécuritaire. <strong>En l’absence de chambres noires professionnelles accessibles au public dans la région, les artistes finissent souvent par: travailler dans des installations douteuses; choisir de travailler uniquement des processus numériques; ou, malheureusement, abandonnent complètement leur pratique photographique.</strong>

Ayant déjà travaillé ensemble à toutes sortes d'initiatives créatives DIY et, plus récemment, dans un centre d'artistes autogéré, elles connaissent bien les réalités de la scène artistique contemporaine à Moncton, ainsi qu'à des niveaux plus régionaux et nationaux. Elles sont toutes deux passionnées par l’idée d’apporter la photographie analogique et toutes ses possibilités artistiques à l’écosystème culturel dans lequel elles ont grandi.

Le désir et le besoin de faire partie d’une communauté centrée sur la photographie pour échanger et créer aux côtés de personnes partageant l’amour pour cette pratique intemporelle sont réels.</strong> F Stop vise à combler ce besoin en fournissant un accès et une éducation au médium ainsi qu’en étant rassembleur pour une communauté centrée autour de pratiques analogiques.

Nous organiserons également notre assemblée générale inaugurale pour intégrer de nouveaux administrateurs afin de former la première itération officielle de notre conseil d'administration.
