Chafe Champion Club

Donation protected
Would you like to be a part of the Chafe Champion Club? It is a group of friends and art lovers pooling resources to defray the cost of Preserving & Promoting the Gary Chafe Art Legacy. I’m his daughter Maya, and I'm asking for a donation, of any amount, to offset the costs for the garychafe.com website and to get the monotype book project going. I know things are financially challenging for many at this time and there are so many worthy causes. If you can help, it would make a HUGE difference for me. He left me an amazing amount of artwork, which I feel a big responsibility. It should be seen, not hidden in boxes.

I don't have the resources to do this alone. While I have made it a priority, I can hardly afford to maintain his website, although I’ve managed for a few years. I have accomplished a huge amount of work over 5 years, whenever I have a few extra dollars. I’ve done my best to be the sole champion of Gary's art and I've accomplished a lot:

 1) I have all his remaining paintings, monotypes (individually sleeved in archival envelopes), ephemera and sketchbooks boxed, labeled and stored safely.

 2) We did three shows in the 2 1/4 years I lived in SB, (Thanks Barb Larson and Studio 111) plus the amazing one-day show/memorial at CAW.

 3) I've rebooted his website, with his granddaughter Alishanee’s help, and photographed all the remaining work, please go to and like garychafe.com. We also had all 400 remaining monotypes flat-bed scanned.

 4) I have had 37 paintings (some in private collections) professionally photographed and secured reproduction rights. Documentation work needs to continue.

 5) I recovered one important painting that was languishing in a garage in a private collection, under-appreciated, now on display at the home of one his major patrons.

 6) I was able to place three stone sculptures at Art City in Ventura, at least for viewing, if not for sale.

 7) I have worked extensively on the inventory, though it isn't complete.

 8) I've had a turquoise mask restored that I found in pieces in a plastic bag, at a cost of 1500. Safely in storage.

 9) I have had a second edition of the Chafe/Basho greeting cards printed up and have secured re-orders from several retail outlets. I need to continue promoting these cards. I have also ordered a limited edition of 36 sets of the 9.5 X 12.5" (1968 original size) Basho images.

 10) Long Term Projects:

Agent or Representation:
Sales were a supplement to my income in SB, but mostly to folks who collected his work when they knew him as a friend. I wish I could somehow get  his work into the larger art world; advice on that front would be most welcome. He is an extraordinary artist with a unique and relevant vision that will ultimately be recognized, I just wish I knew HOW to accomplish that in my or my daughter's lifetime. I pray that his work won't just languish in storage. I know this is a long-shot and a full-time job which I don't have the know-how OR the financial resources to accomplish. I think that for most artists, their task in their lifetime is to be the art MAKERS and that the monetization of their work must either be done by a different person, or in a different timeframe, ala Van Gogh.

 Book:
I want to publish a book of his monotypes, or better, get the financing the publishing of a book of his monotypes, which are certainly some of his most masterful work, and the majority of what I still have in my possession.

I intend to get enough Early Childhood Education credits to qualify for a teaching job in the SB area. Much of my career has been working as a Teaching Artist and since am fully bilingual, this is a logical  job prospect, once the pandemic is over and we can safely get back to school. I have self-financed two classes at the CUNY Hunter Graduate School of Education, but I need six more credits to get a decent paying job. I applied for a grant that  will pay for 3 credits, if I get the award. I need to physically be here in order to promote his work, we have advocates in the art world here, his work is somewhat known here and it is uniquely suited to this area, as it represents Southern California.
