Go Green. Save Wildlife

Tax deductible
Maine Beer Company has supported solar power in our new building. For an organization like CFW, electricity translates to heat for owls with spinal trauma to make their injury more bearable.  Or heating pads during critical initial hours of care for cottontails frightened for their lives.

Maine Beer Company has made a lead gift of $25,000 which combined with Tru-Enterprise’s in-kind donation of labor will outfit the building with solar to power all of the facility’s electric. It is a priority of the Center for Wildlife that we focus on sustainability and green initiatives in our new building. With that, we are kicking off a $150,000 campaign to have Pollinator and Organic Food Gardens and a Rainwater Collection Garden at our new facility. Our goal is to raise $150,000 by December 1st for this initiative. Join us by giving today!

Pollinator and Organic Food Gardens will supply native plant species for pollinators, as well as organic foods like lettuce and blueberries for our patients and ambassadors. Patients are fed diets as close to those they find in the wild as possible. However, we often rely on local farmers and donations to supply seasonal fruits, vegetables and plants to the animals in our care. This garden would help to supplement those donations by supplying fresh seasonal plants, vegetables and fruits.

Our Rainwater Collection Garden will be located on our rooftop and allow for rainwater collection to water garden plants. The Rainwater collection system reduces runoff and erosion and will provide sustainability by supplying the center with reusable rainwater for our fruit, vegetable and pollinator gardens.

Since our founding 33 years ago, Center for Wildlife has evolved into an incredibly successful and well-respected organization. By leveraging the experiences gained during that time, building upon what has been learned, and staying abreast of – and contributing to – new and best practices, we are now positioned as one of the region’s and nation’s most innovative wildlife rehabilitation and education organizations.  Our team is often requested to speak as wildlife and community outreach experts on topics such as “Wildlife Diseases”, “Compassion Fatigue”, and “Nature Connection.”

The $4.5 million Investing in Wildlife Campaign will enable our organization to focus on long term sustainability with an eye on strengthening regional capacity to return injured animals to the wild, prevent injuries from happening, and empower the community to mitigate human impact on wildlife and habitats. With annual support and capital campaign funds, we can continue providing learning opportunities and expanding community outreach to teach and inspire people of all ages to help protect local wildlife and their environment.  We will continue to focus on ensuring long-term financial sustainability of the organization and its work by developing a diverse and sustainable funding base and an active Center for Wildlife community.

The Campaign will also enable us to expand and thrive with a building plan to meet the community’s growing needs for our services. Physical space is the only hindrance to further growth. We have reached our capacity to treat more animals in need in our region, and we turn at least 100 education programs and event requests away each year because we cannot accommodate field trips, indoor programs, or large groups. Between onsite and offsite medical clinic space, offsite conference and education space, and outdoor enclosures and meeting spaces, we currently utilize 6,000 square feet of space. The new facility has a 10,000 square foot floor plan, which is a significant increase, but not so substantial that it is unsustainable. The additional 4,000 square feet is accounted for with indoor education space, including an indoor classroom, auditorium, and nature center; onsite housing for interns (year-round) or staff (during inclement weather); and an expanded medical clinic to meet the demands of increased annual patient loads.
