Cemetery Monument for Augusto Dias

Donation protected
Aloha family and friends,

In 1879, Augusto Dias and his family left the Madeira islands aboard a sailing cutter bound for the Hawaiian Islands in hopes of a better life in this newly discovered land. There were four long months on the open ocean as well as an additional two years of contract work around the island's plantations waiting for him.

Augusto was a very skilled musician and guitar maker, who after his contractural obligations were satisfied, opened a guitar shop on King street. Along with the help of two other luthiers, Augusto adapted Portuguese instrument designs to form the `ukulele, the internationally loved instrument of Hawai`i.

The grave of Augusto Dias, along with markers for his granddaughters at the Makiki cemetery are in serious neeed of attention. The headstone of this historically significant person is hardly legible, and the graves of his granddaughters are not marked at all.

This gofundme page is to allow all those who would like to be a part of a special tribute to Augusto's legacy. We are having a historical bronze plaque installed January 2018 at his gravesite, along with two granite markers for his granddaughters. The bronze plaque that is currently being made will look similar to the design proof shown above.

Not shown in this older photo, the headstone itself is now listing precariously, and will be righted and cleaned.

The family of Augusto Dias thank you for your help!
