Rambo Needs Your Help!

Rambo is an energetic young Husky/German Shepherd/Australian Shepherd who loves spending his time visiting the barn, rollerblading, playing fetch, and learning new tricks. He loves to make new friends, both two legged and four legged, big or small. 

This morning, our beloved Rambo was hit by a truck at high speed. Someone must have been watching out for him, as given the trauma he sustained, he could have been killed. He has some air around his lungs and in his abdomen that should resolve on its own, but he will require surgery to repair his broken pelvis. There is also the possibility that he will have nerve damage based on where the fractures are, but we won't know more until a neurologist looks at him. The pelvis is fractured in two separate spots, and will require plates and screws. The prognosis is good that he will regain full mobility with surgery, proper care and rehabilitation.

Rambo has been so well behaved through this ordeal, and has received lots of comments from veterinary staff since this morning. He will undergo surgery in two days when the air has subsided from his lungs and abdomen. We will keep everyone posted, and appreciate any and all help we can get in making sure he receives the best of care!

Update August 1st, 9:30 am

Thank you everyone for your support and well wishes. I just spoke with the vet and she said that he remained very stable over night and that his blood work is coming back consistent with the trauma he sustained - he has no signs of continued internal bleeding, but does have some elevated liver counts as she said the liver usually takes the most impact. He is interested in eating and keeping his energy up, so we will be bringing him some boiled chicken to enjoy this afternoon. Surgery is still set for tomorrow morning, so we hope to be able to bring him home next week.

It was so hard waking up this morning to just an alarm, and not my well trained pup assisting the alarm by jumping into bed and snuggling up alongside us. The house is so quiet without him running around with a toy, or trying to have verbal conversations with us about his desire to accompany me to the barn. He typically will smell the pants I'm putting on.. and if its a pair I usually wear to the barn, he runs upstairs and waits at the door for me. If it is a pair that I put on to go to work, or elsewhere, he will just quietly lay down in the hall as I leave.

I think what still shocks me the most is the distance of which he came running back yelping and crying to me from the road while I was screaming his name with the condition his pelvis is in. He had to duck under fences too in order to get back to me. It just breaks my heart how loyal these animals are to us. Once he got to me, he barely made a peep and has been the perfect patient. Let's hope he continues to let us do all we can for him!
