My name is Ceciley Maxa. Nearly a year and a half ago, my life was drastically changed for the worst. A simple ankle sprain, or so I thought, suddenly developed into an unbearable condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
CRPS is severe, chronic pain developed as a response to an injury and does not go away on its own. It’s characterized by the following signs/symptoms: ongoing burning pain, pain more intense then the original injury, swelling, allodynia (painful response to non painful stimuli such as touching, noises, clothing), inability to regulate body temperature, abnormal hair growth, weakness, tremors, hypersensitivity, muscle spasms, joint stiffness, altered perception of affected limb, bone density loss, and more.
According to the McGill pain scale, CRPS is the number one most painful disease in the world. It tops amputation, child birth, and so much more. What makes CRPS so painful is it’s consistency and intensity; not day, hour, or minute goes by that the pain is not there. And not only is the severe pain constant, but it continues to spread throughout the body, every single day. Although rare, sadly about 1 million Americans suffer the intense pain of CRPS.
For me, pain started in my left leg after the ankle injury. I tried countless treatments, some of which seemed to help briefly, but none that could give me lasting relief. With no progress towards recovery, I underwent an agonizingly painful treatment called a lumbar sympathetic block that actually worsened my condition. During this treatment, my IV got infiltrated in my hand, causing the CRPS to spread into my left arm (and guess who’s left handed...). After this unfortunate event, I became unable to write or even work. I’ve been on long term disability for about a year now and all I dream about is getting my life back. But that dream now has a chance at becoming a reality.
A treatment center in Arkansas, the only one in the United States, has a 3 month treatment plan that could give me my life back! However, there is one big problem: my insurance does not cover it.
Therefore, money raised with this GoFundMe will cover all treatment, medical, and living expenses for my recovery journey in Arkansas. I would greatly appreciate your support and prayers during this time! This wouldn’t be possible without all my loving friends and family, and I thank you all in advance for helping me through the most difficult time in my life!
