Palletland 3 Peak challenge
The team at Palletland is raising money for two hospitals which we hold very dear to our hearts, Whiston Hospital and The Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital.
If you haven't followed the story of the Palletland twins, in 2004 Thomas Slater now 30, broke both bones in his left leg playing a rugby match, He later found out he had one of the rarest bone tumours in the world (desmoplastic fibroma). Thomas has undergone several operations to solidify the bone in his leg after the fibroma ate away the inside leaving an eggshell layer of bone supporting his leg. 15 years later Thomas is still undergoing treatment to help reduce the tumour and get some stability in his leg, Thomas now has a metal plate in his leg with 15 screws and a cement paste strengthening the bone.
However before Thomas could undergo treatment in 2004 he postponed his own operations to help his twin brother Ian who shortly after Thomas discovered his bone tumor, Ian was diagnosed with A.L.L, (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia) a form of cancer which attacks the blood, where the body creates too many immature blood cells and not enough mature cells. Ian also now 30, who was undergoing chemotherapy at Whiston hospital endured 11 months of treatment, spending 7 constant months in Whiston hospital where he underwent 3 lots of chemotherapy before having radiotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant from Thomas.
15 year now have passed, Thomas has a beautiful family and should have married his fiancee Danielle earlier this year but due to covid-19 the ceremony has had to be postponed to next year.
Ian has spent the last several years sticking to a self-made promise, to explore the world and see as many countries as possible. after spending 4 years in Australasia, Ian is now home for the foreseeable future until he decides to see more of the world.
Whilst the twins are together for the 15 year anniversary the two have come together along with the help and support of the local family business Palletland and have decided to raise money an give back to the two hospitals who supported them during hard times, Whiston Hospital and The Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital.
The twins aim to attempt for their 31st birthday the 3 peak challenge at the back end of September. The twins have built a caravan of support and along with their father, Ian slater and other colleagues have decided to attempt the challenge to raise a minimum of £2000 (£1000 each) to give back to the two hospitals who helped them be where they are today.
The three peak challenge involves climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales, walking 23 miles (37km) at the total ascent of 3064 metres (10,052ft) in 24hours. This is equivalent to climbing the Empire State Building over 8 times or the Eiffel Tower over 10 times.
The twins plan to be able to give something small back to the hospitals who helped them, 'so we can improve the lives of others like us who are going through hard and trying times'. This money can be used to support families of those suffering, can provide the equipment, entertainment, support for families, and many more ways this money can support these hospitals.
Although this challenge is only 8 weeks away our goal at raising £1000 each for the hospitals is an achievable target with the help of you. Any donation however large or small will mean a great deal to us and will be our motivation on the day.
