The recent economic downturn triggered by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has affected everyone but it has further exacerbated the plight of thousands of needy individuals and families such as Victims of domestic violence, residents of homeless shelters and other less fortunate people.
As Michigan residents were starting to feel the effects of the pandemic in mid-March, Swaroop decided to use his time and his Hutkay restaurant’s resources to serve the needy. With the help of his family members and other volunteers Swaroop started offering box lunches for anybody walking into the restaurant.
The team also delivers free lunch boxes to Delonis Shelter Home at SAWC (Shelter Association of Washtenaw County), Food Gatherers’ Community Kitchen and Safe House for Domestic abuse victims in Ann Arbor, Staples center and Carrot way Low Income housing. Residents include unemployed, homeless, many with families and senior citizens. These are the truly needy members of our State. Meals prepared by Hutkay are very healthy and is prepared with same quality in terms of nutrition and ingredients as food we eat. All items are vegetarian. The compostable boxes, with soup cup and lid, spoons are used keeping in mind recycling.
Daily food preparation expenses are $200 and it feeds about 300-350 people per week as the volunteers work for free.
Seeing this huge undertaking Detroit Duchess Club would like to support Swaroop and help him feed more people. We are asking for a suggested donation of $20, but feel free to donate whatever you are comfortable with. No donation is too small.
