OUR FIRST CD
Recording a CD with a music label is considered one of the most important projects in the life of a string quartet. From the beginning of our path as the Protean Quartet, it has always been one of our main goals to record a CD. After 3 years together, our connection and commitment with the formation and the acquired maturity gained in the process, this seems the perfect moment to present our musical world.
This CD was conceived some months ago together with Gonzalo Noqué, producer, and Eudora Records (https://eudorarecords.com/) and has just been recorded in August 2021. We aspire to let our main strengths shine: our love for the string quartet literature; a daring and fresh interpretation together with a historical and critical perspective, and eventually, our commitment to musicological research and to the diffusion of the Spanish musical heritage.
One of the pieces that is included in our disc will be released as a worldwide premiere; it has neither been recorded nor performed since the XIX century: the String Quartet op.7 no.1 by Juan Pedro Almeida Mota, a Portuguese composer who lived mostly in Spain and worked for the Spanish Royal Court. “Ars Hispana” (https://arshispana.com/) is the musicological foundation which supported the research of the music, transcribing and editing the music for us.

WHO ARE WE?
Created in 2018, the Protean Quartet focuses its activity on historical performance. Their approach, concentrating mainly on music situated between the Baroque and the Romantic period, involves, both for its members and for the audience, a rediscovery of the musical language in technical, stylistic and rhetorical terms, thus proposing the creation of a new musical discourse both individually and as a group.
The Protean Quartet establishes its dialogue with the public through enthusiasm, passion, respect, responsibility and authenticity. To this end, they consider it necessary that the quartet, as an instrument of communication, possesses a critical and historical interpretative spirit. It goes without saying that one of its main creative engines is the recovery of the heritage of Spanish music and its dissemination.
The ensemble is formed by Javier Aguilar, Edi Kotler, Ricardo Gil and Clara Rada. All of them have studied in Berlin (Universität der Kunste and Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler) and Basel (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis). Since its creation, the Protean Quartet has received numerous awards, such as the first prize in the international early music competition "Biagio Marini" 2020 or the inclusion in the FabFringe program of the prestigious early music festival in Utrecht 2018. In November 2021, after being selected in 2021 by the swiss “Jürg Müller Stiftung” for their chamber music series called ST/ART Music Coaching Excellence, the ensemble will perform a concert with the renowned French cellist Christophe Coin, awarded with the prize Goldener Bogen 2021.
THE PROJECT
The music
The String Quartet op.33 no.6 by Joseph Haydn is a magnificent work, full of a charming playfulness. Its fresh and elegant spirit is very present along the composition, and it was dedicated to the Russian Duke, Paul I. This cycle of quartets were premiered on Christmas’ eve in 1781, in the Viennese home of the Duke.
In contrast, there is a key figure in the transition between the classical period and the new romantic period: Ludwig van Beethoven, who opens a new door with effusiveness (and with some criticism...) and proceeds to the inclusion of the idea of "romanticization" in music, changing its conception and form. The quartet included in this project, op.18 nr. 1, is the first piece of his great quartet production, and in it the compositional "new elements" with which Beethoven opposes the previous form begin to be glimpsed, especially in his second movement, endowed with a great dramatic charge.
The quartet by Juan Pedro Almeida Mota, Portuguese by birth who developed his career in Spain, is a good example of the sentimental mission attributed to music. This work, written in the first years of the 19th century, with its melancholy, its serene affliction interrupted by some passionate explosions, can be placed in correspondence with the sentimental novel or the tearful comedy, literary genres very consumed at that time.
The members of the Protean Quartet
Javier studied in Berlin and Basel, at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler", the Universität der Künste and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. He is a member of various ensembles, such as the Geneva Camerata, the Haydn Philharmonie and the Lautten Compagney. He has received numerous grants from various ensembles and institutions, such as the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice, the group Gli Incogniti, the Balthazar Neumann Ensemble and the LMN Menuhin Berlin Foundation. Javier plays on an Italian violin built in 1755 by Antonio Testore.
Edi Kotler completed his studies at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin. He has won several individual awards as well as in the field of chamber music, among them the first prize at the Tel Aviv University Music Competition. Edi collaborates regularly with the "Akademie für Alte Musik" in Berlin, with conductors such as René Jacobs and Bernhard Fork. He was awarded the “America-Israel Cultural Foundation” scholarship and plays on a violin by Nicolas Vuillaume.
Ricardo studied in Barcelona with Ashan Pillai and Jonathan Brown. Later, he moved to Basel for his Master studies with Silvia Simionescu. There began his contact with early music, and Richardo started postgraduate studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with violinist Amandine Beyer. He has been working at the “Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi” and has collaborated with groups such as "Gli Incogniti" or the "Geneva Camerata", playing throughout Europe, Israel and the United States.
Clara completed her cello studies in Zaragoza, Zürich and Basel with Maite García Atienza, David Apellániz, Ángel Luis Quintana, Roel Dieltiens and Thomas Demenga. She completed her master studies in early music with Christophe Coin at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Clara has collaborated with groups such as "Duo Seneca"or the “Geneva Camerata” and teaches cello in several music schools in Switzerland. She plays on two wonderful instruments: a French 1820 Mirecourt cello and a classical cello, a copy of a 2018 Amati-Ruggeri built by Damien Gest.

UNSERES ERSTE CD
Die Aufnahme einer CD ist eines der grossartigste Projekte, die ein Streichquartett haben kann. Seit der Gründung des Protean Quartets haben wir eine CD-Aufnahme zu einem unserer Hauptziele gemacht. Nach drei gemeinsamen Jahren sind unsere Verbundenheit und unser Engagement für das Quartett sowie die erworbene Reife als Ensemble ein idealer Anlass, es zu verwirklichen.
Das Album ist seit mehreren Monaten mit Gonzalo Noqué, Tonmeister, und Eudora Records (https://eudorarecords.com/) in Arbeit und wird im August 2021 aufgenommen. In der CD sollen sich unsere Haupteigenschaften widerspiegeln: Die Liebe zur Kammermusik und zum Streichquartett; Wagemut und Frische in der Aufführung; historischer und kritischer Geist; Engagement für die Wiedergewinnung und Verbreitung des spanischen musikalischen Erbes.
Eines der auf dem Album enthaltenen Stücke ist unveröffentlicht und wird zur Uraufführung kommen. Es handelt sich um das Quartett op. 7 Nr. 1 von Juan Pedro Almeida Mota, einem Komponisten portugiesischer Herkunft, der die meiste Zeit seines Lebens in Spanien lebte und verschiedene Positionen in religiösen und höfischen Musikinstitutionen bekleidete. Dabei konnten wir auf die Mitarbeit des Vereins "Ars Hispana" (https://arshispana.com/) zählen, der für die Wiederherstellung und Edition der Manuskripte verantwortlich ist.

Das 2018 gegründete Protean Quartet legt den Schwerpunkt seiner Tätigkeit auf die historische Aufführungspraxis und konzentriert sich hauptsächlich auf die Musik von Barock bis Romantik. Seine Herangehensweise beinhaltet sowohl für seine Mitglieder als auch für das Publikum eine Wiederentdeckung der musikalischen Sprache in technischer, stilistischer und rhetorischer Hinsicht. Das Ensemble schlägt so die Schaffung eines neuen musikalischen Diskurses sowohl auf individueller wie auf kollektiver Ebene vor.
Das Protean Quartet stellt seinen Dialog mit dem Publikum durch Begeisterung, Leidenschaft, Respekt, Verantwortung und Authentizität her. Zu diesem Zweck halten es seine Mitglieder für notwendig, dass das Quartett als Kommunikationsinstrument einen kritischen und historisch interpretierenden Geist besitzt. Es versteht sich von selbst, dass einer seiner wichtigsten kreativen Motoren die Wiederbelebung des Erbes der spanischen Musik und dessen Verbreitung ist.
Das Ensemble setzt sich aus Javier Aguilar, Edi Kotler, Ricardo Gil und Clara Rada zusammen. Alle Mitglieder haben in Berlin (Universität der Künste und Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler) und Basel (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis) studiert. Seit seiner Gründung hat das Protean Quartet zahlreiche Auszeichnungen erhalten, etwa den ersten Preis beim internationalen Wettbewerb für Alte Musik "Biagio Marini" 2020 oder die Aufnahme in das FabFringe-Programm des renommierten Festivals für Alte Musik in Utrecht 2018. Das Ensemble wurde für das Jahr 2021 von der Schweizer „Jürg Müller Stiftung“ für das ST/ART Music Coaching Excellence Musikprojekt ausgewählt und wird in diesem Rahmen im November 2021 mit dem renommierten französischen Cellisten Christophe Coin, der 2021 mit dem „Goldenen Bogen“ ausgezeichnet wurde, ein Konzert geben.
DAS PROJEKT
Die Musik
Joseph Haydns Quartett op.33 Nr.6 ist von jenem Humor und "Divertimento" genährt, das in den königlichen Gemächern, in denen es aufgeführt wurde, so sehr geschätzt wurde. Die Frische und Eleganz ist in dem Stück, das sich in die Reihe der Quartette (op.33) einreiht, die Haydn dem Herzog Paul von Russland gewidmet hat, durchweg nachvollziehbar. Dieser Zyklus von Quartetten wurde am Weihnachtstag 1781 in der Wohnung des Herzogs und seiner Frau in Wien uraufgeführt.
Im Gegensatz dazu finden wir eine Schlüsselfigur im Übergang zwischen der klassischen Periode und der neuen romantischen Periode: Ludwig van Beethoven, der mit Überschwang (und mit einiger Kritik...) eine neue Tür öffnet und fortfährt, die Idee der "Romantisierung" in die Musik einzubringen und ihre Konzeption und Form zu verändern. Das in diesem Projekt enthaltene Quartett, op.18 Nr. 1, ist das erste Stück seiner grossen Quartettproduktion, und in ihm beginnen sich die "neuen kompositorischen Elemente" abzuzeichnen, mit denen sich Beethoven gegen die bisherige Form wendet, insbesondere in seinem zweiten Satz, der mit einer grossen dramatischen Aufladung versehen ist.
Das Quartett von Juan Pedro Almeida Mota, einem in Portugal geborenen Komponisten, der seine Karriere in Spanien entwickelte, ist ein gutes Beispiel für die sentimentale Mission, die der Musik zugeschrieben wird. Dieses Werk, das in den frühen Jahren des 19. This work, written in the first years of the 19th century, with its melancholy, its serene affliction interrupted by some passionate explosions, can be placed in correspondence with the sentimental novel or the tearful comedy, literary genres very consumed at that time.
The members of the Protean Quartet
Javier studied in Berlin and Basel, at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler", the Universität der Künste and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. He is a member of various ensembles, such as the Geneva Camerata, the Haydn Philharmonie and the Lautten Compagney. He has received numerous grants from various ensembles and institutions, such as the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice, the group Gli Incogniti, the Balthazar Neumann Ensemble and the LMN Menuhin Berlin Foundation. Javier plays on an Italian violin built in 1755 by Antonio Testore.
Edi Kotler completed his studies at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin. He has won several individual awards as well as in the field of chamber music, among them the first prize at the Tel Aviv University Music Competition. Edi collaborates regularly with the "Akademie für Alte Musik" in Berlin, with conductors such as René Jacobs and Bernhard Fork. He was awarded the “America-Israel Cultural Foundation” scholarship and plays on a violin by Nicolas Vuillaume.
Ricardo studied in Barcelona with Ashan Pillai and Jonathan Brown. Later, he moved to Basel for his Master studies with Silvia Simionescu. There began his contact with early music, and Richardo started postgraduate studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with violinist Amandine Beyer. He has been working at the “Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi” and has collaborated with groups such as "Gli Incogniti" or the "Geneva Camerata", playing throughout Europe, Israel and the United States.
Clara completed her cello studies in Zaragoza, Zürich and Basel with Maite García Atienza, David Apellániz, Ángel Luis Quintana, Roel Dieltiens and Thomas Demenga. She completed her master studies in early music with Christophe Coin at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Clara has collaborated with groups such as "Duo Seneca"or the “Geneva Camerata” and teaches cello in several music schools in Switzerland. She plays on two wonderful instruments: a French 1820 Mirecourt cello and a classical cello, a copy of a 2018 Amati-Ruggeri built by Damien Gest.

UNSERES ERSTE CD
Die Aufnahme einer CD ist eines der grossartigste Projekte, die ein Streichquartett haben kann. Seit der Gründung des Protean Quartets haben wir eine CD-Aufnahme zu einem unserer Hauptziele gemacht. Nach drei gemeinsamen Jahren sind unsere Verbundenheit und unser Engagement für das Quartett sowie die erworbene Reife als Ensemble ein idealer Anlass, es zu verwirklichen.
Das Album ist seit mehreren Monaten mit Gonzalo Noqué, Tonmeister, und Eudora Records (https://eudorarecords.com/) in Arbeit und wird im August 2021 aufgenommen. In der CD sollen sich unsere Haupteigenschaften widerspiegeln: Die Liebe zur Kammermusik und zum Streichquartett; Wagemut und Frische in der Aufführung; historischer und kritischer Geist; Engagement für die Wiedergewinnung und Verbreitung des spanischen musikalischen Erbes.
Eines der auf dem Album enthaltenen Stücke ist unveröffentlicht und wird zur Uraufführung kommen. Es handelt sich um das Quartett op. 7 Nr. 1 von Juan Pedro Almeida Mota, einem Komponisten portugiesischer Herkunft, der die meiste Zeit seines Lebens in Spanien lebte und verschiedene Positionen in religiösen und höfischen Musikinstitutionen bekleidete. Dabei konnten wir auf die Mitarbeit des Vereins "Ars Hispana" (https://arshispana.com/) zählen, der für die Wiederherstellung und Edition der Manuskripte verantwortlich ist.

Das 2018 gegründete Protean Quartet legt den Schwerpunkt seiner Tätigkeit auf die historische Aufführungspraxis und konzentriert sich hauptsächlich auf die Musik von Barock bis Romantik. Seine Herangehensweise beinhaltet sowohl für seine Mitglieder als auch für das Publikum eine Wiederentdeckung der musikalischen Sprache in technischer, stilistischer und rhetorischer Hinsicht. Das Ensemble schlägt so die Schaffung eines neuen musikalischen Diskurses sowohl auf individueller wie auf kollektiver Ebene vor.
Das Protean Quartet stellt seinen Dialog mit dem Publikum durch Begeisterung, Leidenschaft, Respekt, Verantwortung und Authentizität her. Zu diesem Zweck halten es seine Mitglieder für notwendig, dass das Quartett als Kommunikationsinstrument einen kritischen und historisch interpretierenden Geist besitzt. Es versteht sich von selbst, dass einer seiner wichtigsten kreativen Motoren die Wiederbelebung des Erbes der spanischen Musik und dessen Verbreitung ist.
Das Ensemble setzt sich aus Javier Aguilar, Edi Kotler, Ricardo Gil und Clara Rada zusammen. Alle Mitglieder haben in Berlin (Universität der Künste und Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler) und Basel (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis) studiert. Seit seiner Gründung hat das Protean Quartet zahlreiche Auszeichnungen erhalten, etwa den ersten Preis beim internationalen Wettbewerb für Alte Musik "Biagio Marini" 2020 oder die Aufnahme in das FabFringe-Programm des renommierten Festivals für Alte Musik in Utrecht 2018. Das Ensemble wurde für das Jahr 2021 von der Schweizer „Jürg Müller Stiftung“ für das ST/ART Music Coaching Excellence Musikprojekt ausgewählt und wird in diesem Rahmen im November 2021 mit dem renommierten französischen Cellisten Christophe Coin, der 2021 mit dem „Goldenen Bogen“ ausgezeichnet wurde, ein Konzert geben.
DAS PROJEKT
Die Musik
Joseph Haydns Quartett op.33 Nr.6 ist von jenem Humor und "Divertimento" genährt, das in den königlichen Gemächern, in denen es aufgeführt wurde, so sehr geschätzt wurde. Die Frische und Eleganz ist in dem Stück, das sich in die Reihe der Quartette (op.33) einreiht, die Haydn dem Herzog Paul von Russland gewidmet hat, durchweg nachvollziehbar. Dieser Zyklus von Quartetten wurde am Weihnachtstag 1781 in der Wohnung des Herzogs und seiner Frau in Wien uraufgeführt.
Im Gegensatz dazu finden wir eine Schlüsselfigur im Übergang zwischen der klassischen Periode und der neuen romantischen Periode: Ludwig van Beethoven, der mit Überschwang (und mit einiger Kritik...) eine neue Tür öffnet und fortfährt, die Idee der "Romantisierung" in die Musik einzubringen und ihre Konzeption und Form zu verändern. Das in diesem Projekt enthaltene Quartett, op.18 Nr. 1, ist das erste Stück seiner grossen Quartettproduktion, und in ihm beginnen sich die "neuen kompositorischen Elemente" abzuzeichnen, mit denen sich Beethoven gegen die bisherige Form wendet, insbesondere in seinem zweiten Satz, der mit einer grossen dramatischen Aufladung versehen ist.
Das Quartett von Juan Pedro Almeida Mota, einem in Portugal geborenen Komponisten, der seine Karriere in Spanien entwickelte, ist ein gutes Beispiel für die sentimentale Mission, die der Musik zugeschrieben wird. Dieses Werk, das in den frühen Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts geschrieben wurde, mit seiner Melancholie, seiner heiteren Betroffenheit, die von einigen Explosionen der Leidenschaft unterbrochen wird, kann mit dem sentimentalen Roman oder der tränenreichen Komödie verglichen werden, literarische Gattungen, die zu dieser Zeit sehr beliebt waren.
Die Mitglieder des Protean Quartet

NUESTRO PRIMER DISCO
La grabación de un CD es uno de los proyectos más entusiastas que un cuarteto de cuerda puede tener. Desde la creación del Protean Quartet, lo hemos situado entre nuestros principales objetivos y tras tres años juntos, nuestro vínculo y compromiso con el cuarteto así como la madurez adquirida como conjunto, comportan una ocasión idónea para llevarlo a cabo.
El disco viene perfilándose desde varios meses atrás junto a Gonzalo Noqué, técnico de grabación, y Eudora Records (https://eudorarecords.com/) y acaba de ser grabado en Agosto de 2021. En él, queremos que se vean reflejadas nuestras principales características; el amor por la música de cámara y el cuarteto de cuerda; el atrevimiento y la frescura en la interpretación; un espíritu histórico y crítico; el compromiso con la recuperación y difusión del patrimonio musical español.
Una de las piezas que incluye el disco es inédita y será estrenada mundialmente. Se trata del Cuarteto Op. 7 No.1 de Juan Pedro Almeida Mota, compositor de origen portugués que residió la mayor parte de su vida en España, ocupando diversos cargos en instituciones musicales religiosas y cortesanas. Para ello, hemos contado con la colaboración de la asociación “Ars Hispana” (https://arshispana.com/), encargada de la recuperación y edición de los manuscritos.

¿QUIÉNES SOMOS?
Creado en 2018, el Protean Quartet centra su actividad en la interpretación histórica. Su aproximación, enfocada principalmente en la música comprendida entre el barroco y el período romántico supone, tanto para sus miembros como para el público, un redescubrimiento del lenguaje en términos técnicos, estilísticos y retóricos, planteando así la creación de un nuevo discurso musical tanto a nivel individual como grupal.
Establecen su diálogo con el público a través del entusiasmo, la pasión, el respeto, la responsabilidad y la autenticidad. Para ello, consideran necesario que el cuarteto, como instrumento de comunicación, posea un espíritu interpretativo crítico e histórico. Huelga decir que uno de sus principales motores creativos es la recuperación patrimonial de la música española y la difusión de la misma.
Lo forman Javier Aguilar, Edi Kotler, Ricardo Gil y Clara Rada. Todos ellos han cursado sus estudios en Berlín (Universität der Künste y Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler) y Basilea (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis). Desde su creación han recibido numerosos galardones, tales como el primer premio en el concurso internacional de música antigua "Biagio Marini" 2020 o la inclusión dentro del programa FabFringe del prestigioso festival de música antigua de Utrecht 2018. En Noviembre de 2021, tras ser selecionados en 2021 por la fundación suiza "Jürg Müller Stiftung" para su programa de ensembles emergentes, interpretarán un concierto junto a renombrado cellista francés Christophe Coin, galardonado con el premio Goldener Bogen 2021.
EL PROYECTO
La música
El cuarteto op.33 nr.6 de Joseph Haydn se nutre del humor y "el divertimento" que tan apreciado era en las cámaras reales donde eran interpretados. La frescura y la elegancia es plausible a lo largo de toda la pieza, incluida dentro de la serie de cuartetos (op.33) que Haydn dedicó al duque Pablo de Rusia. Este ciclo de cuartetos, fue estrenado el día de navidad de 1781 en el apartamento que el mismo duque y su esposa tenían en Viena.
En contraposición, se encuentra una figura clave en la transición entre el período clásico y el nuevo período romántico: Ludwig van Beethoven, que abre una nueva puerta con efusividad (y con alguna que otra crítica...) y procede a la inclusión de la idea de “romantización” en la música, cambiando su concepción y forma. El cuarteto que incluye este proyecto, el op.18 nr. 1, supone la primera pieza de su gran producción cuartetística, y en ella comienzan a vislumbrarse los “nuevos elementos” compositivos con los que Beethoven se opone a la forma anterior, especialmente en su segundo movimiento, dotado de una gran carga dramática.
El cuarteto de Juan Pedro Almeida Mota, portugués de nacimiento que desarrolló su carrera en España, manifiesta bien la misión sentimental que se atribuía a la música. Esta obra, escrita en los primeros años del siglo XIX, con su melancolía, su aflicción serena interrumpida por algunas explosiones pasionales, puede ponerse en correspondencia con la novela sentimental o la comedia lacrimógena, géneros literarios muy consumidos entonces.
Los miembros del Protean Quartet
