CD "Com flores e louros" (Bomtempo)

João Domingos Bomtempo (1775-1842, Lisbon), as is so often the case throughout history, achieved greater recognition abroad than in his own country. After studying the oboe in Lisbon, he soon turned his interests towards the piano, and soon became a pianist, composer, and talented improviser, acclaimed as one of the great musicians of the time, both in Paris and London, cities to which he fled, leaving his beloved country, Portugal, still musically entrenched in the Italian opera. Both capitals saw the flourishing of instrumental music within the romantic movement, and to which Bomtempo was eagerly and enthusiastically drawn, particularly in its clementian side.

When he came back to Lisbon, he tried to accomplish his project of making reforms in the Portuguese musical world, inspired by the models he got to know abroad. Unfortunately, he underwent huge difficulties, being persecuted and incriminated by the absolutists due to his liberal ideas. Nevertheless, he managed to found the Conservatory of Lisbon and organize concerts with symphonic music by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

Nowadays, the situation is almost the opposite: Bomtempo’s name and work have some recognition in Portugal, and to some extent also in Brazil, but anywhere else he is virtually unknown.

“Com louros e flores” refers to an unfinished manuscript by Bomtempo entitled “Questi fiori, questi allori” and whose text says “Cantiamo festosi le nostre vittorie, le geste, le glorie di fama immortale”, a suitable expression of joy and festivity in order to pay tribute to our great Portuguese composer on the 175th anniversary of his death with this CD recording, probably the first to introduce his work with a historical fortepiano.
