CCAC Galapagos Islands Expedition

Donation protected
My name is Adam Davis, and I am a professor of biology at Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, PA. I am asking for your help to raise funds for a group of my best and brightest students to visit the Galapagos Islands for an 11-day research expedition from January 3rd-13th, 2018.

The Galapagos Islands, located in the Pacific Ocean west of Ecuador, were made famous by the great biologist Charles Darwin, who made many of his key discoveries about evolution there.  The islands remain a major site for research on evolution, biodiversity, and environmental science; they are a "living laboratory" where we can see animals and plants found nowhere else on Earth, and observe how they adapt and change in this extraordinary environment.

My students are hoping to retrace Darwin's famous journey through the islands, studying many of the same animals, plants, and geological sites that he did. On this trip, they will visit the nesting grounds of Galapagos penguins and flamingos, study reef sharks and sea lions, observe marine iguanas and lava lizards, and visit the conservation and breeding centers dedicated to protecting the critically endangered Giant Galapagos Tortoise. They will study animals and plants in the wild in a variety of habitats, participate in ongoing reseach projects at the Darwin Research Station, and visit crater lakes and an active volcano. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore one of the most extraordinary and pristine habitats on Earth.

The students going on this trip are pursuing career paths ranging from environmental science to biological research to medicine. They are ambitous, motivated, and are all destined for great things. They've been working hard to raise money for this expedition, but we still need to make one last big push, and that's why we need your help.

The fundraising goal listed above reflects the total remaining balance among the 10 students who will be taking this trip. We are contracted with an educational tour company, Explorica Travel, who will be making all of our travel arrangements. The funds will go to pay for airfare, food, lodging, equipment, insurance, the services of a local guide, and fees for access to the national parks  and conservation and research facilities we will be visiting.

The students are continuing to raise money by other channels, but every dollar closer to our goals helps! Final payments to Explorica are due by November 30th, although a few preparatory expenses might remain after that date, so we're hoping to collect as much as possible by then.

As an evolutionary biologist, it will be a dream come true for me to be able to take my students to such a unique environment in order to study the very forces that shaped life just as Darwin himself once did there. Your contributions will go toward what will no doubt be a life-changing experience for these amazing students just setting out in their scientific careers, and I thank you in advance for your support.
