LEA EN ESPAÑOL ABAJO The Berkshires’ cultural institutions, including its museums, historic sites, and visual and performing arts nonprofits, are a cornerstone of the region’s celebrated identity. While these institutions bring attention and prestige to the area, many of us who work in these spaces struggle with precarious employment and low pay, with conditions only worsening amid the pandemic. Since last spring, the leaders of many institutions have laid off and furloughed hundreds of workers, leaving some of us to face job loss or reduced hours during an already challenging time. This continuing situation disproportionately affects facilities, front-line, security, and summer season workers, as well as Black and Indigenous workers, workers of color, LGBTQIA+ workers, and those with disabilities and/or compromised immune systems. In solidarity, <a href="https://changeberkshireculture.contactin.bio/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Change Berkshire Culture</a>  (CBC) is launching a mutual aid fund to support our financially vulnerable colleagues as we move through this challenging time together.  The CBC Mutual Aid Fund is a community-based effort to raise and redistribute money to Berkshire culture workers in hardship. Gifts of $500 each will be given without conditions to help our colleagues cover housing, healthcare, food, utility, and other immediate expenses. Applications for relief funds will open when we reach $5,000, a milestone allowing us to make our first round of gifts to ten recipients selected by lottery. We hope that funding will be available in multiple rounds.  This fund is run by and for Berkshire culture workers, independent of any single institution. CBC's five-member Mutual Aid Fund Steering Committee is indebted to the organizers of <a href="https://sites.google.com/view/museumworkersspeak/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Museum Workers Speak</a>  and the <a href="../../f/fq6sj-mfa-boston-mutual-aid-fund" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MFA Boston Staff Mutual Aid Fund</a>, whose expressions of care and respect for their colleagues inspire us.   Who should donate? Everyone who loves and wants to support Berkshire cultural institutions, including: - Trustees - Donors - Members and patrons - Seasonal residents and frequent tourists to the Berkshires - Culture workers who are still employed - Anyone who believes in the mission and purpose of this mutual aid fund and wants to support Berkshire culture workers Whether or not you can financially support this fund, we hope you will share this fundraiser with those who might be in a position to contribute.  Who should apply? Any Berkshire cultural worker facing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 crisis is encouraged to apply. Funds are intended for those in most urgent need of assistance with covering housing, healthcare, groceries, transportation, utilities, and other essential costs. Applicants may include those who have been laid off or furloughed; had hours reduced; had seasonal or freelance opportunities cancelled; or whose households have lost a major source of income since March 2020. Recipients do not need to be current residents of Berkshire County.  CBC trusts culture workers to self-select in applying.
