Cathy Wilson’s Stroke Recovery Journey

Mom’s Journey:

On March 20th, Mom was taken to Eastside Medical Center via ambulance and was diagnosed with colitis (inflamed colon), and slight pneumonia.

On March 26th, as she was being discharged, Mom suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke. She had to have emergency brain surgery to save her life. The neurosurgeon said that due to so much blood and swelling on her brain, he had to remove the right half of her cranium to relieve pressure and drain the blood.

During the weeks afterward, there were small signs of responsiveness from Mom; hand squeezes, eyes opening and moving.
As of today, four weeks after her stroke, she remains in a minimally conscious state.
She will open her eyes and look around, but isn’t very responsive.

April 14th, the doctor told us she had aspiration pneumonia, and MRSA (staph infection). They have been treating the infections with antibiotics and breathing treatments which have helped significantly. The latest X-ray showed her lungs had improved, and the doctor says it has mostly cleared up.

She is breathing on her own with oxygen assistance in her nose. They have also put a PEG feeding tube in her stomach.

We are praying and hoping that she will improve enough to be accepted into Shepherd Center, or a similar rehab facility, because we want the best care possible for her and her recovery. However, as of right now, every rehab center and skilled nursing facility has declined her based on the state she's in.
It’s looking like our only option for the moment is in home healthcare. As long as Mom doesn’t get any more infections, it’s sounding like they will discharge her soon. Please pray as we try to prepare for this. We are hoping and praying she will improve so she can go to a rehab facility at some point soon.

As most of you know, the cost of these hospital bills will be immense. Insurance will cover some, but not all of her facility/rehabilitation/ in home healthcare costs. The money raised will go towards these expenses, as well as covering existing medical bills that were previously not covered by insurance.

Anybody who knows our sweet Mom, knows her heart for the Lord. She has touched so many lives, spreading the love of Jesus all around the world. From running children’s camps, to medical missions, to after-school programs, taking part in missionary work is who our Mom is to the core. With the prayer and support from so many of you, she’s been able to witness in Ukraine, Belarus, Honduras, Spain, and right here in Atlanta. We believe God is not finished with her yet!!!

Prayer Requests:
1. When we say "improve", we need her to become more fully conscious, and consistently responding.
2. Please pray for our family as we care for Mom in the days ahead.

We pray and remain hopeful for a full recovery, for we know what our God can do! We are also praying for peace and patience to face whatever road God has for Mom. We love you all, and thank you so much for your support, love, and prayers.

Isaiah 41:10
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
