I think starting from the beginning seems appropriate for you to understand what our family has gone through.

Back in 1998, our mother at age 44 was diagnosed with breast cancer in the left breast, Stage 0. During this time, she shared the news with us and the immediate plan was simple. She underwent a lumpectomy and no chemotherapy or radiation was needed. She sought a second opinion, learning that is was possible this would come back within 12 years. Fast forward to 12 years, age 56. She was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer, estrogen induced.  12 weeks of chemotherapy treatment, 3 months later. She was unable to take any hormone therapy from this forward on in her life, including supplements. She was diagnosed in October 2010 and by May, she was having her double mastectomy and finished with the 12 weeks of chemotherapy. We remember like it was yesterday, all of us. She of course lost all of her hair pretty quickly, yet seemed to remain so calm and full of life. She was tired a lot, but she continued her days as if nothing was happening.  She is such a strong woman that we admire so much. Medications afterward for 5 years made it very difficult for her to feel “normal” at times, but we all understood. When she made her 5 year mark, it was a big deal and we all felt relieved, no one more than she.  We continued to celebrate with her each year, even if by remembering together in a text or phone call.

You can’t imagine the heartache when just a few weeks ago, our family received very bad news. Our mother’s cancer is back and it has spread to her liver and sternum bone. She is stage IV metastatic breast cancer and there is no cure. She will begin chemotherapy every 3 weeks soon and a shot for her bones. This will last as long as it needs to as this is just to maintain a way of life.  The hope is that the chemotherapy shrinks the cancer all over her liver. While being a family of logical thinkers as well as Christians, this has been the hardest struggle of all. What do you do from here? How do you pray for this? And most of all how is this fair? She is the sweetest, kindest, most gentle and healthiest person. Her amazing strength and emotional support still for others during her own trial is incredible to watch.  She is always busy with something and can’t seem, nor does she want to sit down.  However, she is in pain most of the time and as well as tired and nauseous. She needs to eat every 3 hours to help with maintaining her strength, making sure she receives enough nutrients, especially protein.  This can be very difficult at times to do so. As a family, we decided to create this gofundme account, not only to ask for help, but to ask for prayers. Even if you read this and are unable to help, pray.  Our hope is to share this story of our mother’s amazing grace, praying you will want to help in some way.
