Cates Creek Bridge on the MST

The Cates Creek bridge was knocked down by Hurricane Florence on September 14. This bridge is a vital link in the Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST). The bridge is located in the town of Hillsborough, NC and links Hillsborough, Gold Park, Eno Riverwalk and the Occoneechee speedway with the eastern part of the MST, the Forest Ridge Community and the Hillsborough Sportsplex. It spans a deep ravine of Cates Creek and has resulted in a complete severing of the MST.
A new bridge will cost $2000. Labor will be provided by local volunteers. A rebuild date is in the works. Check back here for updates!
About me: I’m Paula and I live and play in the Hillsborough community. I find the MST to be a huge asset to the area. ALL money from this GoFundMe goes to the MST for the Cates Creek Bridge rebuild. The MST had significant damage due to Hurricane Florence and to assist them in getting this section rebuilt, I offered to set up this GoFundMe page for them.
About the MST: The Mountains-to-Sea Trail is a simple footpath stretching almost 1,200 miles across North Carolina. From Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains to Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks, the trail provides more than just a walk in the woods. The trail traces the diversity that is North Carolina. Walkers can experience ancient mountains and small Piedmont farms, coastal swamps and colonial towns, changing textile villages and barrier islands. Each year volunteers devote thousands of hours managing this handmade trail which has become a state treasure.
The triangle area has one of the longer continuous stretches of MST, 100 miles from Clayton to the Eno (in western Orange County). Active MST trail building in Orange County is currently occurring connecting Gold Park to Occoneechee Mtn and within the Seven Mile Creek Preserve (near Moorefields). Extending the MST southwest from Occoneechee Mtn could start in the next year or two, with the VERY long-term goal of reaching Saxapahaw!
