Catalina was found on the streets of Morocco, in M'diq. Unable to eat on her own she was taken in by a local woman named Mona Liza. She was loved and bottle fed in Morocco for months. A vet in Tangier, Morocco was visited when there was an urgent situation with her mouth the end of August. He performed some manipulation of the mandibles. She had full movement of her mouth for about a month.I have adopted Catalina from Morocco and brought her to the states due to her urgent mandibular issues. I took her to her first American vet visit for information and an exam on September 28. Upon examination Dr. Gandy said she can only open her mouth about 2 inches and said her best chance is to go to the University of Mississippi Veterinary College for surgery. She said the surgery needs to be done fairly soon because it is already causing the degradation of her dental health, difficulty eating and delaying her ability to be spayed (mouth doesn't open wide enough for intubation).
Dr. Gandy called the university while I was still in her office to get me more information about referring us. Dr. Gandy talked to the surgeon at the college and advised them of the current and past issues with her mandibles. The most information that could be given over the phone is that they do the work-up and estimate the day prior to surgery. She was advised that a fractured mandibular surgery runs between $2000-$3000. Although there isn't a current fracture the mandibles will have to be brought forward and secured into place with hardware (possibly a metal plate and pins). The surgeon thought this would be a comparable situation for giving us a bit of a monetary estimate for the care she will need. I will be seeking out more information from more local veterinary surgical sources about pricing for a local surgery to see the difference. There will be updated with the more information I have!
Catalina's life has been an amazing journey, very hard for her most of the time and I want to make her life as beautiful as she is. Please, help me give her the life she deserves!
