Symphonic Organ for Castro Theatre Challenge Grant

Tax deductible

When I first arrived in San Francisco, I had an afternoon with nothing to do and dropped by the Castro Theatre to see a movie (that I can't remember now).  But I do recall that before the film rolled, rising out of nowhere was a mighty organ.  It, and the crowd's reaction, welcomed me and told me I was home.  Now, David Hegarty, the brilliant organist I heard play over 25 years ago has a plan with a silver lining:  replace the now departed Wurlitzer with the largest hybrid organ in the world!

Before the Pandemic, I joined the Committee to help David raise $1.1 million.  San Francisco’s Castro Theatre was purpose built for the unique and delightful sounds of organ music. Built in 1922, the Castro Theatre is San Francisco Official Landmark #100,  has attracted daily audiences of up to 1,400 each, more than 100,000 per year, and is celebrating its centennial in June 2022.

World-renowned organ designers and digital sound technicians have freely contributed their expertise and collaborated to create one of the the world’s best symphonic organs. It will replace the much-beloved but now-departed “Mighty Wurlitzer” organ which was enjoyed by generations, and its temporary replacement.

Movie audiences, student groups, music aficionados, performing arts patrons and visitors from around the world will be continually entertained, enriched and engaged by the multi-faceted capabilities of this unique instrument.

$1.1 million is required to supplement the priceless contributions of time and money from a multitude of enthusiastic volunteers and a select handful of world-renowned experts. $812,762 has been raised to date, $287,238 is needed .

Elizabeth Pang Fullerton has pledged $100,000 to complete the drive.  Your gift will be doubled up to $100,000!

You can help, too!  We need you!!!   You will be rewarded by David in the Castro Theatre at the keyboard of his masterpiece:  the grand new organ at the Castro.  Give today.  Thank you!
