CASTER FAMILY SUPPORT FUND

August 22, 2018

Dear Friends,

Our beloved Dorian Caster tragically passed away on Friday, July 20. Dorian was a kind and caring soul with a beautiful and infectious energy.  He was passionate about life and this world, and he captured this compellingly through the lens of his camera. He was a loving husband to his wife, Corrie, and devoted father to their children Kai and Rio. He loved his family and friends deeply and unconditionally, and anyone who had the opportunity to meet Dorian can attest to the remarkable ways in which he touched everyone’s lives.

For those of you who don’t know, Dorian suffered from unmanaged depression for many years. Though his death feels nearly incomprehensible, it is also a painful yet important reminder that mental illness is often an unseen struggle, and speaks powerfully to the disparity between one’s public portrayal and their own private realities. It is Corrie’s hope that Dorian’s memory will prompt a greater awareness of mental health, as suicide is a painful and complicated topic that we all must address if we are to respect the lives lost.

In recognition of Dorian’s battle with mental illness, we must all consider the consequences that this struggle has on his family. While each of us has felt the impact of losing our dear friend far too soon, the life-altering ramifications his children will experience as a result of this tragedy is unthinkable. The unfortunate reality is that while we grieve alongside them, the aftermath of this adversity has the capacity to transform the trajectory of their lives. Before they can truly grieve, they must face some very daunting questions: can we remain in our house and how will we pay the bills? Will this tragedy limit what we can achieve in our own lives? Therefore — we must collectively take action and help answer these questions. We must ensure Kai and Rio have the ability to choose the course of their own lives rather than having that course forced upon them.

These are wildly talented, kind and caring boys, and I promise you that assisting them as they move forward with their lives is an investment in a better world.

I ask you all to please join me and consider donating to this vital cause.

Sincerely,

Taylor Sheridan

September 14, 2018 Update

Dorian Caster - Los Angeles
9/11/1971 - 7/20/2018

Los Angeles mourns the passing of Dorian Caster, a husband, father, godfather, and friend whose warmth and generosity of spirit touched us all. Dorian was born and raised in Woodstock, NY, and soon moved to Manhattan, where he discovered his passion for photography. Through mentorship and assisting talents such as Bruce Weber, Titzianno Magni, Mark Holm, and Dah Len, as well as study at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Dorian honed his skill and began his professional career in New York.

He met his wife-to-be, Corrie, in Minneapolis. They fell in love and moved together to Australia, where he set the foundation for a prolific career in lifestyle and advertising photography.

Dorian’s tremendous talent was nowhere near exclusive to his profession. We saw his work peak in his own creative expression, in the photos he took of nature, of his family, of the aspects of this world inextricably linked to his heart and soul. He had just completed his exhibition called Malibu Dreaming, a collection that reflected the calm and serenity he felt amongst the beaches and waves. Watching him work was an absolute pleasure. Through his photography we saw someone fluent in their craft, unique in his ability to capture and reinvent a natural beauty we all cherish.

Everyone who knew Dorian recognized within him a man full of generosity and love. He lived for his family and was enormously proud of his sons. He was constantly bettering himself and those around him, striving for health and peace, going to yoga, caring for his beloved dogs, hosting trips to the beach, and he never hesitated to offer friends and acquaintances a comfortable place to stay.

An artist at his core, he opened his home as a platform for creativity, and countless projects, such as photo shoots, music videos, novels, fashion collections and albums were created in thanks to his unselfishness. He was smart and curious, intuitive and insightful, and he always shared his experience, whether the conversation was spiritual or intellectual, casual or personal.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Corrie, his two sons, Kai and Rio, his parents, Jan and Warren Bernhardt, his siblings, Tim, Nicole, Reid, and Treena, his aunt, Cathy, his grandmother, Pearl Zeitz, his brother- and sisters-in-law, Charles, Divine, and Misty, his nieces, Ella, Lana, Yasmine, Alexis, and Tiffany, his nephews, Jonathan, Storm, Rain and Skyy, his cousins, Nicole and Adrien, his brother in all but blood, Clark Sabbat, his godson, Luka, and a multitude of others whom he inspired over the course of his life. He will live on through his work and in the memory of all those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Dorian, we cannot put into words the love and appreciation we have for all that you have given us. We love you, we miss you, and we are tremendously grateful to have shared our lives with you.
