CASI'S Heartworm Treatment Fund

Tax deductible
The Converse Animal Shelter, Inc. (CASI) is one of only a few no-kill shelters serving the San Antonio area. We began in 1982, operating a humane facility for unwanted and abused animals in Converse Texas, working to place them in suitable homes throughout San Antonio. Since we are a no-kill shelter, we can only take in additional animals as others are adopted out.
The shelter was built on land donated by George Ammeman, with donations, volunteers and lots of hard work. All funds raised are used for the benefit of the animals. Since September 1982, over 18,000 helpless, abandoned, unwanted, sick and lost animals have come through our gates.
We offer people a way to find a new best friend while saving a life. We also provide opportunities and community support events that advance responsible pet ownership and the humane treatment of pets.
Please help us help these needy animals with a donation
(no amount is too small) to the Converse Animal Shelter, Inc. We gladly accept checks for donations. Please visit our website (www.mynewbestfriend.org) for more ways you can help.

We currently have NINE dogs that are heartworm positive. In keeping with our mission statement, we treat them, see them through their post-treatment, and adopt them into good homes. The drug we need is expensive, but the dogs are worth it. Please consider donating to help us help them!

Let's Give Haywire the Amazing Life He Deserves
Haywire is a young adult mixed breed who was rescued in late January 2014 by some awesome ladies who cared enough to brave the cold to save him. He had been seen for months wandering near Calaveras Lake with a deeply embedded wire wound around his neck. The folks who lived nearby left him food daily and tried to get close. But he was so fearful of people that he would not come close enough to allow even the rescuers to reach him. The rescuers reached out to the dog community for help. If they could catch him, would someone else be able to ensure he received medical care and a safe place to live until he could be placed in a loving home? CASI responded "yes" and directed the rescuers to take the dog to our veterinarian, who was ready to assist. One of the rescuers had medications to ease his anxieties so she hid them in bits of tasty treats. It took many hours and a lot of patience but they were able to secure the big dog.
The veterinarian removed the embedded wire and provided treatment. Although he had a massive infection, there was no permanent damage. On Feb 6th 2014, Haywire (named by his rescuers) came to live at CASI. Originally terrified, Haywire now responds to the staff and visitors more openly. He has recovered enough to begin his Heartworm treatment with the goal of eventually finding a loving home. Meanwhile, Heartworm treatment is a very expensive and complicated procedure and we need your help to create a Happy ending for Haywire.

Help Vegas Beat the Odds
Vegas is a very sweet 5-year- old male Black Mouth Cur-Pit Bull Terrier blend. He was originally adopted from CASI in June 2009. Fast forward to January 2014. CASI’s manager received a phone call from Las Vegas, Nevada Animal Control. They found a stray dog that was micro-chipped and the chip identified the dog as a CASI dog. Unfortunately, Animal Control in Las Vegas is a “high kill” facility, meaning the dog would be put down within days. Luckily, some very dedicated staff, volunteers, and donors came to the rescue. They defrayed the cost of the trip and allowed us to send our manager and a volunteer to go to Nevada and bring this needy pet home to Texas.
We don’t know how this dog ended up in Las Vegas, but it was clear he had been loved at one time: he is house-trained, obedient and affectionate, and enjoyed riding in the car--all the way back from Nevada! So of course we "re-named" him Vegas. Although healthy, Vegas did test Heartworm positive. We now need your help to help defray the cost of his treatment and prepare him for his forever home. Help Vegas continue to beat the odds!
