Costa Rica Storm Relief Fund

Donation protected
Hi,

I'm Caroline Puschendorf. I live in Devon in the UK but as a Marine Biologist I work in Costa Rica in and around a small fishing village called Cuajiniquil.

I've been working in Cuajiniquil and with the local people over the past year for a Coral Reef project in the adjacent national park Area de Conservacion Guanacaste (www.acguanacaste.ac.cr ).

Last week Tropical Storm Nate hit Costa Rica and with immense amounts of wind and rain it devastated communities, landscapes and infrastructure.

The small fishing town of Cuajiniquil, in the Guanacaste Province on the north Pacific coast, was hit very hard. People lost everything as their homes became inundated and the swollen river washed away their posessions. The weather destroyed their fishing boats and swamped the local school. Many have no home and no way to make a living.

The community is working together to help each other out - sharing out clothes and necessary things they have mangaged to get together. But they need help. Some people have nothing.

I would like to raise some money to help buy household items like chairs, tables, plates, fridges, rice cookers, mattresses, clothes, toiletries and more, for the families that have lost them. I would also like to buy stationary, books and toys for the primary school. If possible I would like to also help replace lost fishing equipment so that the fishermen can work again to support their families.

To do this, I will be withdrawing the funds and using them directly to buy items such as those mentioned above, and others that become apparent as necessary once I arrive in Cuajiniquil. With the help and information of my contacts in the community, such as the boat captain, people I have stayed with and people who have come out on my marine biology trips, I will deliver the household items to community members.

Over the last year, I have been welcomed into these people's homes, and they have helped me out enormously. I am heart broken that they have lost so much.  It's time for me to help them, with all the support I can muster.

Anything we can contribute will help this community get back on it's feet.

I am hoping to get out to Costa Rica in the next two weeks, so the sooner you donate the better.

Please donate what you can. Thank you so much.
