To know Casey Cotton and his family is to immediately fall in love with them.  For the decade that I have known Casey and Nicole, I see a vivacious, generous, fun loving couple working incredibly hard to attain the American dream all on their own.  At the same time, they’re always selflessly giving of themselves to whatever their friends or community needs, donating numerous hours to the schools and athletics of our town.

It’s hard to understand when you hear about this young man in his 30s, still playing hard core Goalie for the local Men’s Soccer team, lauded as one of the best in his field (technology) in all of San Diego, amazing family man….. goes to the doctor in early December 2015 to see about a nagging headache and comes home with a diagnosis of Oligoastrocytoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer.

Brain cancer…...that is the kind of news that hits you on a random Tuesday that no family will ever be prepared for.   They were told that it was a miracle that Casey was still here given the size of the tumor and that it was not curable (yet, as technology is getting better every day).  Casey and Nicole, along with an army of doctors, embarked on a journey to give Casey to have the best chances by having him undergo a craniotomy, then radiation and then chemotherapy. Unexpectedly, he incurred spinal complications which threw two additional back surgeries at them and prevented the continuation of chemo treatment.

To say this couple exudes grace under pressure is an understatement.  Through all of this, Casey continued to work as his devotion to keep his family above the fold was paramount to how he was feeling.  Nicole created an ongoing normalcy for their sons Jacob and Zach with school and sports, while still attending every single doctor's appointment, and there were a lot.

As I watched their journey, I see how hard times really defines what a family is made of.  I see the photos on Facebook of a family that is grabbing every day of life and squeezing it for everything it’s got.  I see a couple who has greater love and devotion than most I know, yet has had more challenges in their short 18 year journey together.  That is a lot for a young couple to go it alone.   A burden is lessened when it is shared.   That is where we come in.  Casey’s form of cancer is aggressive, though at the moment is stable.  They have exhausted his limits of the primary available tools to fight it:  Surgery, Chemo and Radiation.  There are new state of the art techniques that are not covered by insurance that are available for this rare type of tumor.  Our hope is to help fund the life-saving options he needs.

Casey, as a former marine, put his life on the line to protect our families.  It’s our turn to help protect his.  Help us to help him to beat this cancer with every tool available.  Click on the below website to make a donation to help save a life and a family who are so grateful for you and your love.

All donations go directly to Casey and his family.

Thank you for your generosity, love, and support.
