I'm Nancy, and I live on the Western Slope of Colorado, but my beloved boyfriend Mikael lives in Mayagüez, on the west coast of Puerto Rico, with his aging mother, Magali, and his aunt, Damaris. He assures me there home is very safe, basically built like a concrete bunker on a hill, and they were stocked up on provisions.
I last heard from him about 10am Puerto Rico time on Wednesday, September 20th, the day Maria hit, when he was able to call from their landline. Cell phone towers & Internet went out the evening before, the landlines soon followed. As of the evening of the 20th, the entire island is without power, and about 80% is without clean drinking water.
Mikael thought it would be at least a week before communication could be restored. Now, FIMA is present and at work in P.R., but the official prognosis is that it will take months before the antiquated system can be repaired and power can be restored. Their power grid was completely wiped out.
The good news is, in all likelihood, Mikael and his family are fine, and P.R. has many relief shelters set up. Also, Mikael has many friends here in Colorado. He completed his undergrad in Gunnison at Western State, and is continuing to pursue graduate studies in the creative writing program there. As his friends have talked, we've decided perhaps it's time for him to come here, or one of us to go there to help out, or at least make sure he and his family are okay. We're not sure what the needs are, but know his home and the family car were in need of some repairs even before the hurricane hit, and we'd like to either help out with those (an estimated$700), damages that might have been caused (at least $400), or a ticket (at least $400).
Anything you can do, even if it's just to say a prayer or send good vibes his way and Caribbean way, is much appreciated! I know he loves and is very grateful for all his family and friends.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions for me. I'll update here and Facebook the moment I hear anything from him.
