Carry The Baton

Donation protected

There is a pervasive societal mindset that has dropped the baton in terms of how we take care of humanity and maintain our forefather’s legacy to create an equal, fair, and safe society. "If it’s not my problem, then it’s not my problem." There are times when we do need to carry the baton for a person or group of people that cannot hold onto the baton for themselves. We live in a society with a plethora of resources and “haves” because of the carry-the-baton mindset. We enjoy it, yet, we do not pay it forward. will provide free legal assistance to persons facing the stigma of mental illness in the courts. Mental health diagnoses are extraordinarily complicated even for some behavioral health providers. Therefore, the courts do not understand mental health diagnoses. Symptomatic behavior that includes mania, auditory & visual hallucinations, delusions & psychosis is an enigma. The symptomology of Post-traumatic stress disorder is in a separate category but can mirror various mental health diagnoses. PTSD is minimized and underrecognized. It can be difficult for law enforcement and the courts to decipher between what is a PTSD response to a true threat and what is delusion, mania or psychosis. Although, sometimes these two entities pretend that they cannot tell the difference.

Personality disorders are a different beast. A personality disorder is a long-term pattern of thoughts, feelings & behaviors that are maladaptive and inflexible. Antisocial Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder are in the same cluster because they bring hella drama which can create havoc for persons with whom they are personally, professionally or intimately involved. The symptomatic behavior of persons diagnosed with a personality disorder manifests as covert & overt sabotage of others and manipulative relationship triangulation driven by a lack of empathy. Some borderline persons can be downright mean while other BPD's just do not want to be forgotten or abandoned. Currently, the courts are getting schooled by personality disorders because they are hard to "prove" and often covert. A lack of empathy keeps emotions in check and allows a person to keep-it-together in the presence of others, including the courts.

The core problem of the mental health crisis is personality disorders. Mental health diagnoses manifest very painful symptoms that are intangible and difficult to explain to a person that has not had the same experience. How in the hell do you explain psychosis? Staying strong in the face of a lack of validation and stigma cultivates an immense degree of empathy. Persons with mental health diagnoses are often very compassionate. Hereditary factors play a role but the fact that they care so much is what got them ill in the first place. Hypothesis: If the personality disorders would leave the sweetie pie mental health diagnoses alone, then we could get a handle on the mental health crisis. The solution is not that complicated but that is a topic for later.

CTB will also provide free legal assistance to homeless persons diagnosed with mental health disorders. The stigma of mental illness often infiltrates a person’s living situation. Unlawful Landlord indiscretions are very common. Frequent, abrupt moves that precede street life create an opportunity for both identity theft and identity fraud which can insidiously deteriorate the infrastructure of a person's life. This circumstance requires legal assistance to navigate and resolve. Only a lawyer can truly rectify the problem. will provide continuing education workshops and resources to attorneys and judges to teach about the various mood disorders and personality disorders. Also, provide information on productive interventions for defendants and share new findings in the treatment of mental health diagnoses. will gravitate toward law students as employees and provide internship opportunities. may have a court watchdog program to monitor for discrimination and human rights violations that can accompany cases involving mental health diagnoses. Due to the wrecked state of the judicial system, the ACLU cannot accommodate the need. CTB can proactively intervene with advocacy and hold attorneys and judges accountable (try anyway) and prevent defendants from having to navigate through the arduous appeal process after the injustice has occurred. Proving reason for appeal can be difficult and very expensive. is not yet a 501(c)(3) but it will be.
