Carrick on Shannon has a well-established reputation as a beautiful and safe town to enjoy. Recent initiatives such the Purple Flag Award and the innovative Ambassador Program have indeed enhanced this reputation. Notwithstanding the above crime statistics continue to be of a concern and there are few if any of our community who have not witnessed or experienced damage to property, theft, public disorder, assault or worse. This initiative is a community response to mitigate against these unwelcome occurrences (antisocial behaviour, property damage theft, assaults, shoplifting, fraud, etc) and indeed to assist with the location or sadly the recovery of missing persons of which there have been a number of recent and tragic incidents in our town.
Experience elsewhere has shown conclusively that the presence of public CCTV has a dramatic impact in assisting investigations, reducing criminal behaviour whilst also increasing detection, prosecution and conviction rates but to date resources have been only been available to larger towns and cities
A recent and specific Government funding support to assist communities of medium/smaller sized towns has been announced to the value of €40,000. In this context, a not for profit Company ‘Carrick Community CCTV Ltd’ has been established and advised by a cross sectoral community committee comprising business, residential, local authority, Gardai and public representatives to seek funding and oversee the implementation of a state of the art CCTV system for Carrick.
The various and required consultations, endorsements, consensus, data protection and consent issues have now been successfully addressed and technical specifications completed and the Committee are now pleased to formally confirm the commencement of the €110,000 project for which a 10 month time frame is envisaged to complete final design & specification, tender/contract administration, fundraising, civil and associated works, installation and commissioning with final handover anticipated in early 2018. The scheme comprises 11 cameras at strategic locations with number plate recognition offering almost seamless and 24-hour coverage of the approach roads, town centre and riverside areas. Given the modular nature of modern CCTV systems the design will be future proofed for further expansions and a sinking fund for ongoing maintenance and upgrades is included in financials with three years warranty and two additional years’ operating and service maintenance costs included in the €110k capital program.
