'Help Us Row Through A Tough Year Campaign'
Carrick on Shannon Rowing Club was established in 1836 in the beautiful town of Carrick on Shannon in the West of Ireland. It is one of the oldest rowing clubs in the world and home to Frances Cryan, Olympian in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Taking a stroll across the bridge over the River Shannon beside the Clubhouse, one cannot help but stop and gaze over the silent beauty of the river, interrupted only by the rhythmic rowing of the young rowers on the river.
The Club is run solely by volunteers who ensure that these young rowers get year-round training and who themselves were junior rowers back in the day. Here's our problem – back in 2009 we made a mistake, we didn't have the right insurance, and an insurance claim was made against us. Now we are faced with raising the €15,000 needed to rectify the problem. The difficulty of the situation is if the money is not raised, the claim will go to court and the Club will face an even bigger financial bill. As volunteers with various family and work commitments, we have learned a valuable lesson from this oversight and are still shaking our heads over this mishap. The Club as you can imagine has very limited resources, this being the reason we are asking you to please help with a donation of any kind. WE NEED YOUR HELP.
Our young rowers are out on the River Shannon in all sorts of weather. As with many small Irish towns, there are not many choices in sports, especially for girls. With the exception of football and swimming, to have young people commit to the sport of rowing with the majority on the team being young women is a phenomenal achievement all by itself!
