In 2013, Carolyn started experiencing extreme fatigue, mild numbness in her hands, and a minor gait(limp) due to tightness in her right leg. Initially, we didn’t know what was going on because the symptoms did not sound familiar together. Through hours and hours of research, several doctors, many tests/bloodwork, MRI’s, a lumbar puncture, trips to SF to a specialist, she was eventually diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis(MS) in 2015.
Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, progressive autoimmune disease that causes damage to the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As of now, Carolyn’s MS symptoms include extreme tightness in her abdomen(comparable to the feeling of wearing jeans that are way too tight for you), fatigue daily, mild numbness in her hands, poor coordination and balance, and her most extreme symptom is her gait(limp).
After 10 months of battling insurance, failing, and going through another route, Carolyn was approved to start a blood infusion medication treatment. She had her first 6.5 hour infusion in early August and then another one 2 weeks later. This medication does not work for every patient that receives it so we are in a waiting period to see if her body responds to it. Our hope is that her body will respond well to the medication and her symptoms will alleviate over time and the progression of the disease will slow down.
Every trip to the doctor, every travel expense to the specialist, neurologists, bloodwork, MRI’s, trips to the hospital, and treatment is VERY expensive. I am choosing to create this GoFundMe account to say that we are at a point of swallowing our pride and asking for help. Carolyn gives so much of her time and energy to our community at work as a Therapist and it’s so hard to see her financial stress affect her on top of her MS symptoms. I understand that money is a stressor for everyone as well, so any gift is truly and deeply appreciated.
