Hi All,
My name is Caroline Smyth and I’m a 38 year old living in Dublin. I’m sharing my story today to try and raise money to help me recover from a long illness and get my life back.
As some of you know, it all started about 10 years ago, and after a lot of ups and downs, I eventually had to give up my job at Meryll Lynch in 2008. It was in 2010 that I was diagnosed with ME or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. But that was actually a symptom, not the cause, of something much more complicated. I attended different clinics and tried loads of different treatments but despite all that, I was still deteriorating and nobody could figure out what was happening. It wasn't until about 4 years ago when a great doctor I was attending in Belfast referred me to a clinic in Germany that I found out what I really had was Advanced Lyme Disease.
The problem was that I had Lyme disease for such a long time before I was diagnosed that I had developed a lot of secondary infections and complications over the years. Such as liver complications and Ankylosing Spondolitis which is a form of arthritis in the spine and an auto immune condition. For the last 6 years, I have been more or less house bound and have needed help with everyday tasks such as shopping, preparing meals and driving, all the things I took for granted when I was well.
Then in 2014 I heard about a doctor on the West Coast of USA who specializes in Lyme disease and has had a lot of success with his patients. I have attended his clinic on a number of occasions over the past 2 years for short stay treatments, and for the first time, we have made some breakthroughs and I can see light at the end of the tunnel…. I just need some help to get there!
So far, I have had amazing support financial and otherwise from my family, extended family and some other great friends (thank you all!) and have been lucky enough to be able to pay for treatment until now. At this stage, I really need your help to finish my treatment and recover my health. Any donation will be really appreciated.
The money raised will go to fund an extended stay of treatments in America, a couple of follow visits and any treatment that I need back in Ireland. I am really hoping to come home more like my old self!
