Caroline's Medical Fund for Julia Adams

I have created this fund for my dear friend Julia Adams and her precious cat, Caroline Elsa. Caroline is a previously abused cat who found a happy home with Julia four years ago. She lives a wonderful life in Pittsburgh with her feline sister Marizpan Anna.

Caroline was born with both a heart murmur and only one truly functioning kidney (her other is too small to work properly). She has stones in her one working kidney that have been breaking down, resulting in stones becoming lodged in her ureter. This has resulted in kidney disease, leading to kidney failure. The treatment for this has been fluids, subcutaneous fluids given at home as well as IV fluids during many stays in the hospital in more critical times. Recently, Caroline's ureter became obstructed again, but this time, her body was no longer able to tolerate the IV fluids given in the hospital. Her kidneys failed, leading to a build up of toxins in addition to an extreme state of excess fluid build up causing heart failure, and respiratory distress due to fluid in her lungs. Caroline was taken to the Animal Medical Center in New York on Dec 28, admitted through their emergency center. She underwent a specialized surgery for a SUB, Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass Device. This is essentially a permanent catheter that allows urine from the kidney to travel to the bladder when the ureter becomes obstructed. Since her surgery, she has been stable, but still highly critical her doctors work to balance the treatments for her kidneys and her heart. Caroline remains in the ICU at the Animal Medical Center in New York, where she is recovering from surgery. Her kidney values are improving slowly, as is her breathing and heart function. She is now focusing on bringing her kidney values down and continuing her recovery until she can return home with her mom and sister.  She will need follow up appointments in 2 weeks, 1 month, and every 3 months following to remove her stitches, remove her feeding tube (which she will still use while at home for the first 2 weeks - 1 month), and clean her SUB device. Cats who have had this procedure at the AMC in NY have a high percentage of full recoveries and go on to live healthy, happy, and normal lives.



The cost of the surgery itself was $12,000 and the estimated additional costs for treatment is $10,000-$13,000, not including costs of any follow up appointments. With this fundraiser, I hope to help Julia cover some of the costs of this expensive and stressful situation. The funds will go straight to Julia to be used towards Caroline’s medical expenses including the surgery and veterinary stay. The urgent trip may also result in Julia to miss some work, increasing the strain of this event on her finances. Because of this, I would also like to assist in offsetting some of the costs of Julia’s unexpected stay in New York including hotel fees and transportation expenses if possible.


If you know Julia, you know how incredibly selfless she is. She commits herself 110% to everything she does and her cats are so incredibly important to her. Whenever I need anything, Julia is always there with a helping hand and all the support in the world. Caroline means the absolute world to her. If you are a lover of Julia, Caroline, and/or animals of all kinds, I hope you consider donating to this worthy cause. 2020 has been such a trying year for each of us in our own unique ways, and by coming together I hope to make a difference and alleviate some of the financial stress from Julia. She spends countless hours a week spent teaching and showing empathy to others. I know she will be so incredibly grateful for any amount you can give! She would never ask for anything like this, which is why I am doing this for her out of love and appreciation.
