Family /Friends Helping Carol

Her battle to fight cancer continues.  Our sister, family member and friend, Carol Cabanilla Guzman, was initially diagnosed with stage 2 colon/rectal cancer, in March of 2012.  Following the heavy news, it was definitely a challenge for her as well as her supporting family to cope with the diagnosis, however, we faced the trouble with high hopes and complete optimism.

Extensive treatment was conducted, from surgery to remove the tumor, to a strenuous chemotherapy treatment plan and a series of radiation treatment.  The journey to recovery was far from easy. Hoping for the best, we did notice promising results as the cancer seemingly appeared to subside.  After about 6 rigorous months of treatment, scan results could no longer detect any cancer cells, and the news brought tears of joy to everyone, especially the family.

At the end of the treatment, though Carol had shown some significant side effects, physically, emotionally and mentally, the road to recovery seemed ever so close.  A month passed, no sign of cancer.  3 months, a normal life seemed a lot more possible than ever before.  However, we learned the hard way that life throws more than one curveball at you to strike you out.  By the fall of 2014, we were devastated to hear that the cancer metastasized to her lungs and neck.  Yet again, for the SECOND time, she was scheduled for another series of chemotherapy to fight the relentless cancer.  As the cancer had metastasized, she was now diagnosed with stage 4 colon/rectal cancer.  Though this time it wasn’t our first rodeo with cancer, it did not make it the least bit easier for her or her family.  2 weeks at a time, treatment was done on Oahu.  Though as a family, we stuck by her side and battled the struggle day by day.

After 12 enduring cycles of very intensive chemotherapy treatments over an accelerated span of 6 months, along with stronger prescribed medication, the cancer had subsided again.  At the end of the treatment, no cancer cells could no longer be detected. The second time was much sweeter than the first, and the rejoice could not have been any more joyous.  The battle for life, the struggle to live, at the end of the day, we were blessed to have her live for more days to come.

By this time, her first grandchild had already been born and everything seemed to fall into the right place.  Her son had graduated, and moved closer to family. The trying times seemed to have ended.  However, following her July 2015 followup CT scan, daunting news had reached us yet again as her cancer came back for the THIRD time.

Carol is now facing treatments every other week on Oahu in hopes to beat cancer for good.  Times are dire and very trying for her family.  With continuous medical treatments from Maui to Oahu, funds are getting very limited.  Though monetary value is much appreciated, a simple blessing is greatly appreciated as well.  This fund will help the Guzman family pay for the extra financial burden of medical bills.  Your positive thoughts and prayers are much appreciated.  Mahalo for taking the time to read her story.  God Bless!
