Systemic racism has been a deep-seated problem in this country for centuries. The recent lynchings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Pittsburgh’s own Antwon Rose and countless other Black people have brought forth the very real threat that members of the Black community face every single day; racism. The time to take action has long passed.
As Carnegie Mellon University students we have all been impacted by the great city of Pittsburgh. We’ve benefitted from a great education and unique life experiences here. Oftentimes, CMU can seem like a bubble separated from the rest of the city. As students and residents of the city of Pittsburgh, we have benefitted from what the city has to offer and we have a responsibility to care for its citizens and to hold its leadership accountable. What’s more, as students and alumni of Carnegie Mellon we are doubly responsible to hold CMU accountable.
We cannot sit idly by as Black people in our community and in our city are continually under attack by the racism that is entrenched in our policing, healthcare, education, and other institutions. We must act to care for the present and the future of the members of the Black community.
We have identified 10 organizations that are doing work to serve and uplift the Black community of Pittsburgh. We urge you to donate, to encourage others to donate, and to find out ways you can engage with these organizations and organizations like them, in Pittsburgh or in whatever city you reside in.
Our goal is to raise at least $5,000 by June 19, 2020. We will urge the current CMU administrators, trustees, President and Provost to stand with their student body and for Black Lives Matter by matching our collective efforts and donating to these organizations as well. Take a stand for what’s right.
