As many of you may know, my mother, Carmen Cadavid, has been battling Bulbar ALS for a few years. She was diagnosed in April 2017 though her systems have been present since 2015. Though it has only been a few years since symptoms have presented themselves, the disease is heartbreaking and takes it a very heavy toll on the physical body, while your mind remains in tact.
The cruelest part about Bulbar ALS is how it takes away some of life's simplest pleasures: talking and eating. The former, secludes you from a room full of people, and the latter deprives you from one of your most primitive human instincts. Its heartbreaking that my mom cannot experience life's simple pleasures, and that her body is slowly betraying her. This is the reason why I want her to experience France to most of her ability, while she can still travel and enjoy the pleasure of visiting Paris. It has always been a dream of hers to visit France, to see the Mona Lisa, stand in front the Musee d'Orsay, and see the Eiffel Tower. Additionally, she wants to visit the Sanctuary of our Lady of Lourdes, a holy pilgrimage site for the sick and those in search of healing. After an awful fall my mother suffered in late 2018, I decided to figure out how to get my mother to France and accomplish her life dream of going to Europe. Since she had never been to Europe, I knew this would be my mission, get my mother to Europe and it had to be fast while she still had most of her health. With the help of my father, we found two organizations to help finance our trip, The ALS Family Charitable Foundation and the Mary Beth Benison Foundation. However, we are still about $1,500 short of the funds we need to travel. I have created this GoFundMe to help finance the remainder of the trip. It is with all my heart that I am asking the online community to help send my mom to France. It is never easy to ask for help, but I know in my heart that in this situation it is the right thing to do.
