This page was set up by Tony and Kristin Bernazard to help cover the cost of one-way flights to bring Tony's mother, Iris, her sister, Evelyn and their mother, Carmen stateside. We have seen an outpouring of love and dozens of you reaching out to ask how you can help and we'd love to share in the care for these amazing ladies.
As you likely know, Hurricane Maria, came through Puerto Rico and completely devastated the island; leaving them with no power or water for now almost a week. For anyone, these conditions would be difficult and for these ladies, the difficulties are heightened.
-Carmen is in her late 80's and dealing with normal aging health concerns.
-Evelyn is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for stage-four cancer.
-Iris has a surgical implant in her back that requires charging to keep her mobile.
The current expectation for power and water to be back to normal is 4-6 months!
Iris, who is retired, left her home in Ohio going to Puerto Rico a few months ago to help care for Evelyn during the treatment plan.
Evelyn was brought to the hospital on Friday, September 22 because she was feeling particularly bad and they weren't able to do anything for her with limited availability to medical devices. On Monday, September 25, they were able to get in contact with Eveyln's doctor who could not give them a timeline for when they'll be able to treat her.
As you can imagine, it has been VERY difficult to get in contact with them. The landline phones work on and off and their cell phones now are completely dead. Today (Monday, September 25) we were able to confirm with them that they can and will leave Puerto Rico (Evelyn's husband Jesus will be staying at their home in Puerto Rico).
After hours of being on the phone, we've booked a flight with Delta (flight 992) the soonest available which is Friday, October 6 to Atlanta (cost is $680). From there we'll get them via plane another flight to Cleveland, Ohio to Iris' home with her husband Brian. **We're working on getting them out sooner though this has not been an easy task** We're also waiting to see if they'd like to rest in Atlanta for the day before getting on the other flight to Cleveland.
Your support is greatly appreciated and just shows these ladies how loved they are and that we didn't forget about them! It will help to meet their basic needs and get all of them the care and protection they need to survive. Any funds we raise over the flight expenses will go directly to these ladies to assist in purchasing anything they couldn't bring with them and/or medical expenses.
