We are Carlton Digby Friends, a group of Parents, Teachers and supporters of the incredible Carlton Digby Special School.
Based in the Nottingham suburb of Mapperley, we provide high quality education for pupils with severe, profound and complex learning difficulties aged between 3 and 18.
These needs require the school and staff to teach in a highly creative way requiring specific spaces and approaches that are tailored to each learner, ensuring the best possible learning experience.
We value all our space at Carlton Digby, however, one of the most valuable areas is the sensory room. A sensory room is a dedicated and specialist area that stimulates all senses (sight, touch, hearing, smell, movement etc). For many of the students at CDS the room offers a safe and wondrous environment that encourages relaxation, communication and stimulation in a way that the everyday classroom does not. It allows pupils control over their environment, often for the first time ever.
As the school has grown and the students’ needs have developed, our current well-used sensory room has unfortunately become unfit for purpose and so we find ourselves here on Go Fund Me.
We want to create a fully immersive space that can be used in a variety of ways and require £45,000 to completely redesign and replace the room.
The room will be utilised by all 90 of our learners from calming and relaxation sessions to interactive and story time, inclusive maths lessons and so much more.
The new room will offer an accessible and immersive learning experience for all learners, including those with the most complex physical, health and learning needs.
The new sensory room means so much to us as a school and allows our teachers to be creative and experimental in their planning and delivery of lessons and learning experiences.
Carlton Digby Friends is a group that provide community events such as school discos, fayres Etc to raise funds for projects such as this. During the current Covid-19 pandemic, these efforts become more difficult and we are reaching out to our community for help. We are reaching out to YOU.
We know that many people have been adversely affected by COVID 19 and so if you can’t donate then sharing this post would be a fabulous support. For those who have spare ‘coffee cash’ from home working, we are grateful for that latte and americano coinage or any more that you can spare.
