On April 25, 2018, five members of the Leiva families were in a horrible car accident in New Jersey that resulted in the tragic death of Carlos "Chino" Leiva at the young age of 47. Chino had traveled from abroad to New Jersey, USA, with his family to spend time with his sister Katya, who is receiving treatment for breast cancer. Chino’s two daughters, ages 7 and 2, were in the accident - suffered multiple cuts on the face and head, and orbital and leg fractures respectively - but they are recovering well. Chino’s and Katya’s mother, Vicky, who was visiting from El Salvador, suffered terrible injuries and remains hospitalized in New Jersey.
Chino left behind his best friend and soulmate of 20+ years, Susana, to care for their two amazing daughters. Chino was an exemplary father figure, responsible for the daughters’ child care. He was often heard saying “Don’t feel defeated!”, leading a life without resentment, serving people and always in a loving manner. When Susana said goodbye to him so she could return to work so he could spend more time with his family in New Jersey, she didn’t know it would be the last time she would see him.
Katya has been battling breast cancer since 2017. She still needs to complete her radiotherapy sessions before she goes into the recovery phase. As she is the one who resides in New Jersey, she has now taken on the responsibility of caring for their mother while her own her treatment continues.
Vicky had multiple fractures (jaw, arm, ribs and back) and has already had two surgeries to her back and arms. She is finally, and after more than two weeks in ICU, breathing on her own. Her road to recovery and rehabilitation will take many months, and the medical expenses alone have already exceeded $250K. We are not sure when she will be able to return home to El Salvador.
We are setting up this fund requesting to please help both families financially to cover the financials hardships that come with the unexpected death of a spouse, to help Susana and her daughters through this heartbreaking transition period, college funds for their two daughters, and medical and legal costs for Katya and Vicky. God knows the complexities and financial burden they are experiencing given their logistical situation, so any help we can provide them will be greatly appreciated.
We are friends with Susana and her family, whom we've known since we were students in middle school. Despite the distance among us, we have kept in touch all these years, share such a deep history and memories that we think of ourselves as one big family. They are all such kindred spirits.
Specifically, I, Vivian Lee, am a close friend of the family and currently living in California, US. Given the logistical challenges of the parties involved in El Salvador, Columbia, and in New Jersey, I will the beneficiary for these funds and will be transferring the funds monthly to Susana through Paypal. These funds will be used for Vicky's medical expenses and to help Susana for her daughter's medical and educational expenses going forward.
El 25 de abril de 2018, cinco miembros de la familia Leiva fueron víctimas de un terrible accidente de tránsito, que resultó en el triste fallecimiento de Carlos Leiva, conocido por sus familiares y amigos como "el Chino". Tenía sólo 47 años cuando murió. Había viajado con su esposa y dos hijas a New Jersey, Estados Unidos, para pasar tiempo con su hermana, Katya, quien se encuentra en tratamiento por cáncer de mama. Las 2 hijas del Chino (de 7 y 2 años) sufrieron heridas en el rostro y fracturas: la mayor en su rostro, en la órbita; la menor en su pierna. Ellas, afortunadamente, se están recuperando bien. Katya y la madre del Chino, Vicky, quien estaba visitando desde El Salvador, también estaban en el coche. Vicky sufrió daños graves en el cuerpo y se encuentra aún hospitalizada en New Jersey.
Chino deja atrás a su mejor amiga y alma gemela con quien compartió su vida por más de 20 años, Susana, quien deberá velar ahora por su cuenta de sus dos hermosas hijas. Chino fue un padre ejemplar y había asumido gran parte de la responsabilidad del cuido de las niñas. Sus palabras de consuelo, “no se abatan”, son ejemplo de su naturaleza pacífica y afable, y serán recordadas siempre. Chino vivió su vida sin rencores, valorando el presente, sirviendo a los demás siempre con mucho amor. Susana no sabía que cuando se despidió para regresar a su trabajo antes que el resto de la familia, para que Chino y las niñas pudieran pasar más tiempo con la familia en New Jersey, sería la última vez que le vería.
Katya ha estado luchando contra el cáncer de mama desde 2017. Todavía tiene que completar sus sesiones de radioterapia antes de comenzar la fase de recuperación. Como vive en New Jersey, ella es la que ahora se encarga de cuidar a su madre, mientras continúa con su tratamiento.
Vicky tuvo múltiples fracturas en su mandíbula, brazo, costillas y espalda y ha tenido ya dos operaciones. Finalmente, luego de poco más de dos semanas en cuidados intensivos, puede respirar sola sin la asistencia de una máquina. Su camino hacia la recuperación y rehabilitación será difícil y tardará muchos meses. Sus gastos médicos ya han excedido los USD$250,000. Todavía no se sabe cuándo podrá regresar a su hogar en El Salvador.
Estamos estableciendo este fondo para apoyar financieramente a ambas familias para cubrir los gastos relacionados con la pérdida de un esposo, gastos de Susana y las niñas durante este periodo transitorio tan difícil, recopilar fondos y ahorros para la universidad de las niñas, cubrir gastos médicos y legales de Katya y de su madre, Vicky. Sólo Dios conoce la compleja situación y la carga financiera que están atravesando las familias, tomando en cuenta que viven en diferentes países del continente. Cualquier ayuda que podamos ofrecer a la familia será muy agradecida.
Nosotras somos amigas de Susana y de su familia, a quienes conocemos desde la infancia, cuando éramos estudiantes en la escuela secundaria.
