In the fall of 2014, Carlos Frade was diagnosed with prostate cancer. This was a devastating blow to his family. They were just recovering from his beloved wife's near death ordeal. A surgery, that should have been routine, left the family with a Mother and wife who needed constant care and years of rehabilitation. How can life be so unfair? Carlos, true to his steadfast, resilient nature, decided to have his prostate removed, as it was the best prognosis for survival and more time with his family. He proceeded with the surgery. Hopes were high and surrounded by the love of his wife, two sons and grandchildren, he knew he had to beat this. He looked to his wife, Francesca, who had so gracefully now switched roles into the caretaker after Carlos had so selflessly cared for her and held their family together. 39 treatments of radiation began followed by 18 months of hormone therapy. It was a day-by-day routine pumped up with medications that only left Carlos with more problems then he had before the surgery. The after effects were brutal. Carlos was losing his spirit, his soul and his ability to . Francesca did not waiver in her faith. She prayed and cared for him tirelessly. They were both looking forward to the follow-up visit to confirm that after all they had been through, he had indeed battled and won. They could move on with their lives together. But, that was not the case. The new PET /CT Scan done with C-11 Choline, showed that the cancer had spread throughout The Lymphatic System. From the pelvis to the stomach and stopping right before his throat. Carlos and Francesca have exhausted all resources in their fight with cancer and seeking alternative treatments they discovered in their research. Inevitably, Carlos will need more treatments and tests and rehabilitation. All very costly procedures that they do not have any money for and their health "insurance" will no longer cover. This isn't another cancer story. This is a love story. The story of Carlos and Francesca who have been in survival mode for a almost a decade and have managed to hold it together and support each other. Carlos is the most gentle of men who tears up with joy at the mere sight of his grandchildren. He has tirelessly worked his entire life to provide for his family and without complaint as they are all the reason he desires so much to kick this cancer in the ass and spend the next two decades making up for lost time. We all know someone with cancer. One in every two people living in this country are diagnosed with cancer. What they don't tell you is that more then half of those people will die due to lack of resources to fight the disease while trying to keep a roof over their heads. My heart is aching for my dear sweet friend Carlos. He is the champion of the vows "until death do us part". He showed me how to be present for his wife, my best friend, Francesca when she didn't even remember me after her surgery. He instilled a will and faith in me and his whole family that we are all very blessed to have received. I can only convey a glimpse of the total picture of what he has been through and how much I desire to help him survive with the very same conviction he showed us all.
