Carley's Malawi Medical Mission

Hi there! My name is Carley Gilson and I am a junior nursing student at Lipscomb University. I am very excited to tell you about a mission team that I feel blessed to be a part of. This upcoming summer, in June 2018, I will be traveling to Malawi, Africa for a full month. This will be a surgical/medical missions trip to provide care to some of the poorest people on earth.
Here’s some quick facts about Malawi:
· Malawi is among the world’s least developed countries.
· There is a great lack of medical care with only one surgeon per million people. This means there are only 15 surgeons presently serving the more than 15 million people that reside there.
· More than half of the population (52 percent) lives on less than $ 0.32 a day. This includes around four million children living in poverty.
· 1 out of every 8 children will die before the age of 5.... largely due to preventable causes that routine medical care could alleviate.
This summer our medical team will work with the Malawi medical staff at Blessings Hospital just outside the capital city of Lilongwe. Here, we will offer surgical/medical care to people who are suffering. We anticipate performing dozens of surgeries on people who may have waited years for badly needed medical care. We will also spend time in the birthing center, providing both mother and baby care. When we are not serving at the hospital, we will travel into rural villages and provide medical care to the people that can’t come to us. This makes the work we are doing in Malawi a great opportunity for us to show the love of Christ to those who are hurting.
This is an exciting opportunity that I would not have without Lipscomb University and the Sara Walker Foundation. This is dear to my heart because Sara was a Lipscomb alum who passed away with cancer at a very early age. The Sara Walker Foundation chose only six Lipscomb Nursing Students to participate in this mission trip, and I am honored to be one of them. I am so thankful to be associated with an incredible endeavor started in her memory. I know this is an opportunity for me to grow spiritually, but also to provide resources otherwise unknown to the people of Malawi.
If you feel called to, you can also share in serving the people of Malawi with your prayers and/or financial support. As a mission team member, my goal is to raise $1,700 to help fund my entire month in Malawi. These funds go toward my airfare, housing expenses, transportation expenses, as well as my food and supplies for conducting medical work in Malawi.
