JACKSON, Carl Thomas

August 18, 1952 - March 6, 2018

Carl Jackson, beloved husband of Gerry of Calgary, passed away on March 6, 2018, at the age of 65 years.

Carl was born and raised in Innisfail, Alberta, to Dick and Ada Jackson. His was an adventurous spirit and this was reflected in both his professional and personal lives.

After high school, Carl attended the power engineering program at SAIT, convocating in 1972. While working and raising a young family, Carl continued to devote himself to his field. By 1977, he had become the youngest man to achieve a 1st Class Power Engineering Certificate, graduating at the top of his class.

He worked tirelessly throughout Alberta, taking on new and exciting challenges in Grand Cache, Forestburg,
Grand Prairie and Peace River. In later years, his knowledge and experience were influential in Central and South America and as far away as Asia. Carl left industry to follow his passion for teaching taking on a new role at SAIT in 1991.  He not only taught but also worked developing and improving the courses that were advancing his trade. After 20 years there, his legacy to his teaching took on a new chapter when he oversaw the design, construction and implementation of a state-of-the-art power engineering lab, which will continue to benefit future generations of students at SAIT.

In 1973, Carl married his high school sweetheart, Gerry Shanahan. These two kindred spirits came together in what was Carl’s greatest adventure. They both treasured family and expanded their own with the birth of Jason in 1975, and Chelsea in 1977. Carl loved his family as well as his large extended family.

Carl was a world-traveller; he embraced and explored exotic places such as the Amazon, China, Syria, and Kazakhstan to name a few. Mexico held a very special place in his heart. He spent his final days volunteering in Mexico teaching English to children and enjoying a peaceful lifestyle.
