Dear Friends,
As a result of years of civil war, the Cambodian people are severely deficient in the resources, infrastructure, and medical professionals that are necessary for a successful healthcare system. People who are injured or ill struggle to reach the few health clinics, and when they arrive, the clinics lack the most basic essentials that are needed to care for the patients.
This summer, a group of volunteers, including Dr. Lissette Gutierrez, a celebrated obstetrician and gynecologist with experience volunteering in developing countries, will travel to Cambodia to teach local healthcare workers how to make the most out of what little they have. The volunteers will assist the Cambodian healthcare workers in treating patients.
In addition to providing a helping hand, this group of volunteers also hopes to supply medical equipment. The most important donation that we hope to make is a motor vehicle to transport people in need of care to the clinic. A vehicle like the one we hope to purchase is pictured above. In the past, Cambodians have traveled via foot or on motorcycle for hours or even days. If they are too ill to travel, they have no way of receiving care. We need your help to raise the funds necessary for our vehicle.
For our friends in the medical field, donations of any medical supplies are greatly needed. Supplies such as suture gloves, gauzes, antiseptic, triple antibiotic, fetal heart monitors, and scrubs would be appreciated.
Two of the volunteers, Benjamin and Bear Burrows, are young students who will be volunteering at local Cambodian schools. They will be documenting their experience in video form, and all of our donors will be recognized for their charity in the video.

Cambodia is known worldwide for working hard and struggling to rebuild the country after more than 30 years of long civil war and the Killing Regime. The civil war ended in 1998, as the result of reconciliation policy which was initiated by Cambodian Government. However, the development of the country is running very far behind other counties in South East Asia. Health, education, economic and social system are the major concern to restore both quantity and quality, especially in remote areas health services are very limited, because the lack of health centers, staff and materials. In addition, people have limited capacity on practicing health hygiene and sanitation.
Many children (70/1000) die during their first year of life, and 60,000 children die every year before they reach their fifth birthday. Most of these deaths are due to preventable and curable diseases. Violence against children is common, both in the home and at school. Many children are forced to work to support their family’s survival, and must give up hope of getting even a basic education.
The cambodian health project is running and fully support by the Home Foundation (Jahn Arild Stray, Arne Stray, Kari, Kjell Reme and Anne), Sivun Pen and other supporters in Norway, with additional project arrangement in Cambodia by Sarath Keo.
In the past few years, with the supporters based in Norway, five health buildings in four health centers have been constructed: one building was built in Sihanouk Ville, three buildings were built in Takeo province and one building was built in the Preah Vihear province. Moreover, materials and equipment have been supplied for those health centers.
The cooperation and involvement from the beginning of the project, including proposal development, with local authorities such as District Governor, Commune Leader, Village Chief, Provincial Health and District Health will promote cambodian ownership and responsibility.
This project serves around 5,000 people, including children and adults, especially to disadvantaged children and pregnant women in 4 villages of Taphem Commune. There are 7 health staff workers in this health center, but no doctor.
The awareness of people on health, hygiene and sanitation is still low. In addition to providing supplies and teaching the healthcare workers new techniques, our volunteers will also be educated the people in hygiene.
