Care for Madeline

Donation protected
Madeline is a senior Old English Sheepdog who has been  healthy her entire life, enjoying the best in preventative veterinary care, nutrition and a loving home.  My constant companion since she was a pup, Madeline fell suddenly ill 6 months ago, landing her in a veterinary hospital that misdiagnosed her, starved her for over 5 days, recommended euthanizing, and suggested she had neurological damage beyond treatment.  After bringing her back to health from the negligent treatment at this facility, Madeline showed new signs of illness, lameness in her hind legs, an inability to endure her normal activities.  This week, Madeline fell ill again, with many of the same symptoms presented 6 months ago, and further missteps by new veterinarians left her in critical condition.  Luckily, she was referred to a local critical care specialist who discovered an abnormality in her intestine in which part of it telescoped into her colon.  The bad news was that left untreated for so long, this part of her intestine began to die, and emergency surgery was required to save her life.

Senior dogs, like senior citizens, often get dismissed as just being old, and illness accepted as normal for their age.  Unlike senior citizens, there is no obligation to treat a pet, and little oversight in the quality of the care they recieve.

Madeline is currently recovering from a fairly complex surgery, performed by some very talented and special doctors.  But her vet bills have drained our finances completely, and additional funds are needed to pay for the surgery and her care during recovery.

Everyone thinks their dog is special, but anyone who has met Madeline will tell you that she is more than just a great pet.  Madeline's intuitive and empathic qualities are remarkable,  often showing signs of deep understanding not seen in pets.  There is no doubt in my mind that she understands all that is happening to her right now, and it is heartbreaking to watch her deal with the adjustments she's had to make over the past six months to continue participating in her daily activities.  But she's done so happily, and showed genuine signs of improvement recently, until she collapsed a few days ago from this condition left untreated months ago.

Her recovery from this surgery will be gradual, but should allow her to enjoy life to the fullest once again, but without your help, her care is likely to be incomplete.  Today we were told that due to the amount of our current unpaid bill, additional credit cannot be extended until another deposit is made, and we need your help now more than ever.

Where originally we had figured into our campaign goal close to $4000 currently owed to the referring hospital, we have figured that amout out of this campaign altogether.  All tolled we have been through multiple transfusions, diagnostics, CBCs, fluid therapy, hydrotherapy and hospitalization for nearly a week.  And complications have arisin due to an adema at one of the old catheter sites inserted by the referring hospital, which is our current main concern.  Worst of all, as many of you have experienced before with your own pet, our financial situation has now become the foremost consideration by the hospital and the doctors in Madeline's treatment, which has become focused on maintenance and pallative care while she fights through her recovery.

We will post photos of our bill shortly, but we are currently camped out at the veterinary hospital until Madeline can be released to our home care, where she will continue her battle.  She's more frightened than anything else now, as being hopitalized last April left her with lasting fear issues, and our brief visits with her are spent trying to let her know that she will be going home soon, for better or worse.

Please donate what you can to help Madeline on to a full recovery, and to good health she hasn't had in over half a year, and please keep us in your thoughts and prayers to give us all the strength to fight on during this most difficult time.

Thank you,

Michael, Aimee, Madeline and little sister Zooey
